Virginia Democratic candidate Susanna Gibson criticizes the release of explicit videos as a violation of privacy.
Virginia Democrat Denounces Invasion of Privacy
Virginia Democrat Susanna Gibson has strongly condemned the recent release of videos depicting her and her husband engaging in sexual acts on a live streaming site. Gibson describes this as a blatant invasion of her privacy.
The Washington Post has verified the authenticity of these videos, which show Gibson and her husband performing explicit acts on Chaturbate, a well-known pornographic website. During the live stream, they also requested “tips” from viewers, claiming that the funds raised were for a noble cause.
Concerns over Terrorism Threat on Southern Border
On the anniversary of 9/11, Governor DeSantis has raised concerns about a renewed terrorism threat on the southern border.
The videos featuring Gibson and her husband were archived on Recurbate, a publicly accessible website, in September 2022, shortly after she entered the House race. Unfortunately, the exact dates of the live streams remain unclear, and as of Saturday, the videos are no longer available for viewing.
Gibson, who is currently running in one of Virginia’s highly contested House races, released a statement expressing her outrage at the leak of her online activities. She describes it as a despicable act of gutter politics and an illegal invasion of her privacy, specifically designed to humiliate her and her family.
“I refuse to be intimidated or silenced,” Gibson asserts. “My political opponents and their Republican allies have shown that they are willing to commit sex crimes in order to attack me and my family. They have no boundaries when it comes to silencing women who dare to speak up.”
Daniel P. Watkins, Gibson’s lawyer, argues that the release of these videos violates Virginia’s revenge pornography law. This law classifies the distribution of nude or sexual images with malicious intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate as a Class 1 misdemeanor.
“What we have here is a criminal act: the dissemination of revenge porn by a Republican operative,” Watkins states in an interview with the Associated Press.
Gibson is currently facing Republican David Owen for the House seat in Virginia’s 57th District, which is located outside of Richmond and primarily encompasses Henrico County. This district is one of seven highly competitive seats in the 100-member House.
All 140 seats in Virginia’s House and Senate are up for reelection on November 7th. Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority in the House with 49 seats to Democrats’ 46, while Democrats control the Senate with 22 seats to Republicans’ 18. The outcome of the 2023 race could significantly impact Governor Glenn Youngkin’s ability to advance his conservative agenda, which has faced opposition from state Senate Democrats on multiple occasions.
Although Gibson has raised more funds than Owen, with $377,000 compared to his $340,000, she has already spent $300,000 in the primary battle against her fellow Democrat. As of June 30th, Gibson had only $77,000 remaining in her campaign funds, while Owen had $166,000.
During a rally on Saturday, Gibson spoke alongside Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), denouncing the media’s exposure of the videos as a tactic to silence women. While a Republican operative directed the Washington Post to the videos, he denied any collaboration with Owen or other prominent Republican groups.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Gibson’s campaign for further comment.
