C.J. Stroud’s Shaky Debut: Rookie Tank Dell Shines with ‘Circus’ Touchdown Catch
C.J. Stroud’s first game against an NFL opponent didn’t go as smoothly as he had hoped. The rookie quarterback, drafted second overall out of Ohio State, had a short and at times shaky debut that included an interception. However, there was one play that stood out from the rest.

Despite the rough start, Stroud remains optimistic and determined to improve. “I hold myself to a different standard and I know that the guys in the locker room aren’t going to hold me down for this,” he said. “One mistake on national television blows it all up. But, it’s cool, I’ll just keep growing.”
While Stroud struggled, Davis Mills, who started 15 games last season, took over and had a solid performance. Mills finished 9 of 12 for 99 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown pass to rookie Tank Dell. Dell’s highlight-reel catch received praise on social media.

Dell ended the night with five catches for 65 yards, showcasing his potential as a rookie from the University of Houston.
Despite the loss, the New England Patriots gave most of their projected starters the night off, including quarterback Mac Jones. Backup Bailey Zappe had a solid performance, going 12 of 14 for 79 yards.
Stroud and Mills are currently vying for the starting quarterback position for the Houston Texans. The team has been splitting first-team snaps between the two during training camp.
