Tragically, on July 4, 1865, Tucker’s life was brutally ended by Nicholas Wood, a white laborer. As Tucker valiantly tried to defend himself and escape, Wood and two other men mercilessly beat him to death in front of a horrified crowd.
Remarkably, Wood was charged and convicted of manslaughter, a rare occurrence during a time when Black Hoosiers were denied the right to testify in court.
