Two Las Vegas teens who are facing murder charges in connection to the hit-and-run of an officer appeared in court and were seen laughing.
On Tuesday morning, Jesus Ayala, 18, and Jazmir Keys, 16, appeared in court in connection to a crime spree in August. The two are suspected of stealing at least three cars, burglarizing a home, damaging another car on the road, and striking two bicycles in separate incidents.
A 72-year-old man survived the first hit-and-run, however, the other man, who was a retired California police chief, 64-year-old Andreas Probst, did not survive.
The teens could be seen smiling and laughing as Probst’s family gathered in a Las Vegas court room for the hearing.
Taylor Probst, the victim’s daughter, stated how it appeared that the teens were trying to “intimidate” the victim’s family.
“They started trying to intimidate us, mad-dog us,” Taylor said. “These guys, they did not respect the court whatsoever.”
Ayala and Keys were first accused of breaking into an elderly woman’s home. Then, they allegedly stole her car, purposefully ran down two separate bikers, and videotaped the whole incident.
In the recording of the drive to custody, you can hear Ayala saying that the crime “is not that serious,” and that he will be “out in 30 days.”
The two were charged as adults and pleaded not guilty to various offenses, including murder, violence, and grand larceny of a car.
Ayala is now facing 18 charges over the incident, including murder, attempted murder, battery with use of a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident and numerous separate larceny and burglary charges. Keys is accused of filming the attack.
The teens and their attorneys are expected in court again in March to assess trial readiness. The trial has been set for September 16th, 2024.

What impact does the behavior of defendants have on public perception of the criminal justice system?
Ber 2024.
This case has sparked outrage and a debate about the criminal justice system and the treatment of defendants in court. The behavior of Ayala and Keys, laughing and making obscene gestures, has added fuel to the fire.
Some argue that the teens’ behavior is disrespectful and shows a lack of remorse for their actions. They believe that the court should have taken immediate action to address their behavior and send a message that such conduct will not be tolerated.
On the other hand, there are those who argue that everyone is entitled to a fair trial, regardless of their actions or behavior. They believe that the court should focus on the evidence and the facts of the case, rather than the defendants’ demeanor.
