Vance spotlights need for ‘American-made’ goods in times of conflict – Washington Examiner
Vice President JD Vance emphasized the importance of American self-reliance for producing essential goods, especially medicine and weapons, during a recent discussion. He criticized the U.S. dependency on foreign sources, especially in the context of current geopolitical tensions. vance highlighted concerns over the availability of critical supplies and advocated for strengthening the domestic manufacturing sector. He also addressed President Trump’s recent remarks about potential price increases for imported goods, framing the issue as a broader conversation about national strength and security. By arguing for a self-sufficient economy, Vance suggested that american parents should have confidence that their needs will be met domestically, especially in times of crisis. He noted ongoing trade negotiations with China while stressing the necessity of balancing this trade relationship to enhance U.S. manufacturing and exports.Vance also reflected on his potential political ambitions while affirming his commitment to serve effectively as vice president.
Vance spotlights need for ‘American-made’ goods in times of conflict
Vice President JD Vance stressed that the United States must become “self-reliant” in producing its own medicine and weapons rather than getting them from “a foreign adversary,” citing how the U.S. has not produced its own goods throughout his lifetime.
Vance was pressed on President Donald Trump’s recent comments that indicated the price of toys could go up in the coming months due to the ongoing trade deals with other countries. While Trump’s point that children should have “four dolls” instead of 30 has prompted criticism online, Vance contended that parents should ask themselves if they want to have confidence that drugs and medicine needed to cure their children will be available “as an American parent.”
The vice president also pitched a hypothetical scenario in which the U.S. went to war with a foreign adversary and whether parents would like the peace of mind that the weapons used by U.S. soldiers are made within the U.S. rather than another country.
“What President Trump is talking about is bringing self-reliance back to the United States economy,” Vance explained in a one-on-one exclusive on Fox News’s The Story with Martha MacCallum. “We haven’t had it pretty much in my entire life. My entire life, Martha, we’ve lost jobs, we’ve lost supply chain, critical minerals, critical goods have been manufactured by our adversaries, all the president is saying is ‘wouldn’t you like to live in a country that is self-reliant and strong again,’ and his policies are going to make that happen.”
Amid the U.S.’s trade negotiations, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are meeting with top Chinese officials in Switzerland over the weekend. The vice president argued that the U.S. is working to rebalance its trade with other countries, claiming the U.S. has been in a “fundamentally losing proposition” since it does not export as much goods compared to other countries, with China being “the worst offender.”
While trade between the U.S. and China has “stopped completely” over the last couple of months, Vance stated that Trump is confident the U.S. has “the cards” to negotiate properly. As such, the Trump administration is conducting a conversation with China, adding, “We’ll see where it leads.”
TARIFFS WILL KILL THE SMALL BUSINESSES TRUMP PROMISED THEY WOULD SAVE
On the topic of the Department of Government Efficiency, Vance confirmed that he has spoken to Attorney General Pam Bondi on possibly prosecuting people responsible for the “explicit” fraud found by DOGE. Vance also addressed rumblings over Elon Musk stepping away from DOGE, assuring that Musk is not “disappearing” and that the $160 billion saved by the agency is just the beginning.
Earlier this month, Trump namedropped Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible successors to him in the 2028 elections, though Vance denied any rivalry between the two, adding that Rubio is “probably my best friend in the administration.” When asked about his possible ambitions for the Oval Office come 2028, Vance said he could see himself doing “a really good job for the next 1,100 days” as vice president and that the voting public could “figure it out from there.”
