Vance says Trump would veto a federal abortion ban – Washington Examiner
In a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) stated that if former President Donald Trump were to be re-elected, he would veto any federal abortion ban. Vance emphasized that Trump prefers allowing individual states to determine their own abortion policies to avoid ongoing federal conflicts over the issue. This stance is framed within the context of the broader political debate, particularly as Democrats are trying to link Trump’s potential re-election to the imposition of a national abortion ban. Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Trump, suggesting his appointments to the Supreme Court were aimed at overturning Roe v. Wade and that he would support nationwide abortion restrictions if re-elected. However, Vance maintained that Trump is committed to easing cultural tensions surrounding abortion by delegating decision-making to the states.
Vance says Trump would veto a federal abortion ban
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) said on Saturday that former President Donald Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if he is elected president again.
Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Vance said he can “absolutely commit” that if he and Trump win in November, they will not impose a federal abortion ban.
“Donald Trump wants to end this culture war over this particular topic. … Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue,” he said.
He emphasized that the federal government should instead be focusing on economic and immigration issues, such as food and housing prices, while letting the states decide their policies on abortion.
Pressed by host Kristen Welker on whether Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if it reached his desk, Vance said, “I think he would. He said that explicitly he would.”
Vance’s comments come as Democrats attempt to tie Trump to a federal abortion ban if he is reelected.
Vice President Kamala Harris posted on X Saturday that “Trump hand-picked three members of the Supreme Court because he intended for them to overturn Roe v. Wade — as he intended, they did. If he is re-elected, we know he will sign a national abortion ban.”
However, on Friday Trump posted on Truth Social that his administration “will be great for women and their reproductive rights,” drawing the ire of anti-abortion advocates, who say “reproductive rights” is a euphemism for abortion.
Former Vice President Mike Pence was among those who criticized Trump, saying he used the “language of the Left.”
Notably, the Republican Party in July dropped language advocating federal abortion limits from its party platform. Instead, it emphasizes opposing late-term abortion and establishes support for “mothers and policies that advance prenatal care, access to birth control, and IVF (fertility treatments).”
