Vance hints DOGE could continue past 2026 as its work will never be ‘truly done’ – Washington Examiner
In a recent address, Vice President JD Vance discussed the ongoing efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency, suggesting that its work may extend beyond the anticipated completion date of July 4, 2026. He highlighted that significant progress has been made in reducing government waste, but emphasized that the mission is far from complete. Vance stated that the initiative, referred to as DOGE, will likely need continued support from Congress to address “ridiculous” expenditures, expressing optimism that the current Republican-led Congress would be responsive.
during his conversation on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show,” Vance noted that while DOGE has made significant strides, its work will never be “truly done” due to the entrenched nature of waste and fraud within the government. He predicted that future generations will recognize the financial savings brought about by DOGE. Moreover,he mentioned that some Democrats might agree on the necessity to eliminate wasteful spending to prevent it from becoming an accepted part of government operations.
Elon Musk, a known ally of former President Donald Trump, has suggested that DOGE could considerably cut government waste, although the projected savings have decreased from $2 trillion to $150 billion. Musk also indicated that his involvement with DOGE would lessen in the coming months, but he plans to remain engaged on government matters as needed. Irrespective, it has been suggested that DOGE will continue to thrive within the governance even without Musk’s day-to-day involvement.
Vance hints DOGE could continue past 2026 as its work will never be ‘truly done’
Vice President JD Vance provided an update on the effects the Department of Government Efficiency is having on the U.S. government, during which he hinted that this initiative could continue past its expected completion date of July 4, 2026.
Vance’s assessment on DOGE was provided on the Trump administration’s 100th day in office. The vice president said the administration has made “a lot of progress” in eliminating waste but stressed that it is not done “by any means.”
One road bump Vance spotlighted with DOGE’s mission is that it occasionally needs Congress’s help. Vance pitched a hypothetical scenario in which DOGE finds $10 billion in “ridiculous” spending that would need “an act of Congress” if the U.S. government wishes to use it to pay off debt. However, he expressed hope that Congress, currently under Republican leadership, would be “very willing” to provide these necessary acts.
“And so I think DOGE is making a lot of progress, but it’s not done, and I don’t think it’s ever going to be truly done, right?” Vance said on The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show. “This is one of these problems that we have to continually fight against, and the reason why it was such a shock to the system is we had allowed the waste and the fraud to become so endemic in the way that we did government in this country, and I don’t think we should ever go back.”
Vance then predicted that people would look back on DOGE in the years to come and realize how much money it saved, though he admitted that such a prediction could be “too optimistic.” He also suggested that some Democrats would recognize that eliminating waste should continue since “we can’t just let hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud” become incorporated into how the government works.
TRUMP’S FIRST 100 DAYS: WHERE THINGS STAND IN THE INITIAL MONTHS OF HIS SECOND TERM
While DOGE was being pushed in the early stages of the second Trump administration, it has taken a back seat in recent weeks. Elon Musk, an ally to President Donald Trump, has said that DOGE will cut $150 billion in government waste, a noticeable decrease from the original $2 trillion proposed.
Musk has also said that his time working with DOGE will drop “significantly” in May, though he also said he would spend a “day or two per week” on government issues, “for as long as the president would like me to do so.” Regardless, the Washington Examiner’s Joe Concha suggested that DOGE will be left in “capable” hands, saying that DOGE would remain present in the Trump administration even if Musk is not with it every step.
