US Women’s World Cup finish earns them twice as much as before, thanks to the men.
You Won’t Believe How the US Women’s Soccer Team Scored Big Despite Their Worst World Cup Finish
Have you heard about the U.S. women’s national soccer team’s fight against “The Patriarchy” and their quest for equal pay in American soccer? Well, here’s a twist: “The Patriarchy” seems to be the reason why the USWNT just walked away with their biggest payday ever, even after their worst finish in the Women’s World Cup.
Yes, you read that right. Despite losing to Sweden in the Round of 16, the USWNT is set to take home more money from that loss than from their triumphant 2019 World Cup run. And guess who they have to thank for it? The men’s team!
According to The Wall Street Journal, both the USWNT and the USMNT will be receiving $7,312,500 in net prize money from this World Cup cycle. The USWNT’s net payout for being eliminated in the Round of 16 is $2.925 million, which is more than the $2.73 million they received for winning the 2019 World Cup. On the other hand, the USMNT received $11.7 million for their Round of 16 elimination in 2022.
Here’s the interesting part: all the money comes from the same pool now, thanks to a new labor agreement. Previously, the men and women collected their earnings from separate financial pools. So, while the men seem to be losing about $4.4 million, the women’s team has gained that same figure.
Now, you might be wondering if this revenue sharing system is unfair. Well, you’re not alone. In fact, Fox Sports’ Will Cain has pointed out that men’s soccer generates billions in revenue, while women’s soccer generates millions. This has long been the explanation for the pay disparity between the two teams.
Although it may not be fair, it’s the reality we live in. Equity sometimes means bringing others down instead of lifting oneself up. Despite the unfairness, it’s undeniable that the men’s net payout makes up 80 percent of the joint prize pool.
For the USWNT, it’s not only insulting that they owe their larger payout to the men, but they also have to deal with criticism from furious Americans who see their failure as a consequence of their divisive leftist ideology. While the USMNT has tried to avoid such controversies, the USWNT has embraced it as part of their identity.
Even though the USWNT is facing backlash and embarrassment, they can at least take solace in the fact that they will be receiving $7 million as a team. They just need to remember to thank the men for their contribution.
