US to provide $500M in weapons, military aid to Ukraine.
Biden Administration Sends $500 Million in Military Aid to Ukraine
The Biden administration announced on Tuesday that it is providing up to $500 million in military aid to Ukraine. This includes over 50 heavily armored vehicles and an infusion of missiles for air defense systems. The move comes as Ukrainian and Western leaders assess the impact of the recent insurrection in Russia.
The aid is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s counteroffensive, which has been progressing slowly in its early stages.
This marks the 41st time since the Russian invasion into Ukraine in February 2022 that the United States has supplied military weapons and equipment through presidential drawdown authority. This program allows the Pentagon to swiftly utilize items from its own stocks and deliver them to Ukraine.
While the aid packages are typically planned in advance and have recently included many of the same critical weapons for the battlefront, the contents were not likely chosen based on the weekend rebellion by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Wagner mercenary group under his control. It remains uncertain if Ukrainian forces will be able to exploit the chaos within the Russian ranks following the short-lived revolt.
However, the provision of missiles and heavy vehicles can support Ukraine’s efforts to take advantage of the growing feud between the Wagner Group leader and Russia’s military brass. There are lingering questions about how many of Prigozhin’s forces may withdraw from the fight.
The mercenaries left Ukraine to seize a military headquarters in a southern Russian city and advanced hundreds of miles towards Moscow before abruptly turning back after less than 24 hours on Saturday.
In a statement, the Pentagon confirmed that the United States will be sending 30 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and 25 armored Stryker vehicles to Ukraine, along with missiles for the High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
