US long-term involvement in Venezuela ‘real concern’ for Trump and midterm elections: Byron York
Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said the United States’s involvement with Venezuela could affect President Donald Trump‘s bid to focus on affordability, arguing voters generally don’t care about foreign policy.
On Saturday, hours after the U.S. captured former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, Trump said the U.S. is “going to run” Venezuela until “a safe, proper and judicious transition” is accomplished. York expressed skepticism about the Trump administration’s plans to “run” Venezuela, saying the idea of “nursing the country back to health” is “a reason for real concern.”
York noted that Trump spoke about “refocusing on the economy” a month ago, as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
“Because wasn’t it just a month ago that the administration was talking about refocusing on the economy, on the issues that matter most to the American people with the midterms just 11 months away, and talking about the president doesn’t like the word affordability, but talking about bringing inflation down, bringing growth up, creating more jobs, all of those things that the voters said are the most important thing to them, and now all we’re talking about is Venezuela,” York said Tuesday on Fox News’s Fox & Friends.
York added that polls “over decades” show voters generally don’t care about foreign policy, meaning Trump’s boast that he has “resolved eight wars” is not a big selling point. York also said people don’t care about foreign wars in their daily lives unless the U.S. is involved in these conflicts.
“So foreign policy is probably not going to be a big issue in these midterms, and the economy is,” York said.
York also said the “more important priority” with U.S. involvement in Venezuela is preventing foreign influence, such as China, from gaining a “foothold” in the country, rather than attempting to “run every aspect of the Venezuelan government.”
WHAT CAN TRUMP DO TO CHANGE THE TIDE BEFORE THE 2026 MIDTERM ELECTIONS?
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Sunday that Congress will vote on the War Powers Act after the recent mission in Venezuela, saying people are “in fear” over the Trump administration’s actions over the weekend.
Schumer also said the Trump administration’s “escapade” into Venezuela does not help Americans, whereas the Democratic Party is focused on lowering the cost of living, making it the “No. 1 focus” for the party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
