US Doctor Accused of Horrific Mistreatment of Unconscious Patients
A New York City Doctor Charged with Heinous Abuse of Unconscious Patients
A shocking case has emerged in New York City, where a doctor has been charged with the alleged sexual abuse of at least six women. The victims, including several patients, were drugged, filmed, and assaulted during appointments at a prestigious local hospital, according to prosecutors.
Zhi Alan Cheng, a 33-year-old gastroenterologist, was arraigned on charges of sexually abusing three of his patients at New York-Presbyterian Queens hospital. Additionally, he is accused of raping three other women inside his apartment in Queens. Cheng has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The doctor’s troubles began when he was arrested for allegedly raping a female acquaintance in his Queens home. The woman, upon discovering videos of Cheng abusing her and multiple other women, reported the incident to the authorities. As investigators delved deeper into the case, they uncovered a trove of video evidence showing the doctor’s disturbing actions both at his home and workplace.
The footage revealed Cheng groping three hospital patients, including a 19-year-old and a seriously ill 47-year-old. Shockingly, all the women appeared to be unconscious during the abuse, indicating that Cheng may have used anesthesia to sedate them. The court documents also revealed the recovery of various liquid anesthesia and recreational narcotics, such as cocaine and ecstasy, from Cheng’s home.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed her dismay, stating, “The evidence points to a serial rapist, someone willing to not only violate his sacred professional oath and patients’ trust, but every standard of human decency.”
This case follows the recent sentencing of another doctor within the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital system, Robert Hadden. Hadden, a gynecologist, was found guilty of abusing 245 women over a span of two decades and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Although Cheng’s alleged abuse occurred between 2021 and 2022, prosecutors suspect that he may have assaulted other women in different locations, including Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Thailand. However, he has not been charged in connection with those incidents.
Angela Karafazi, a spokeswoman for New York-Presbyterian, expressed deep concern over Cheng’s alleged conduct, calling it “a fundamental betrayal of our mission and our patients’ trust.” The hospital plans to review its patient safety policies and provide additional training for all employees.
