US announces largest weapons sale to Taiwan in its history
The State Department approved a substantial weapons sale to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States on Wednesday, a diplomatic institution representing Taiwan’s economic, military, and other interests.
TECRO is considered the de facto embassy for Taiwan.
The sale, totaling over $11 billion in military weapons, was announced while President Donald Trump delivered an end-of-year prime-time address to the nation. The purchases included a variety of weapons, such as drones, officially known as Altius Autonomous Air Vehicles, helicopter repair parts, Javelin missiles, howitzers, and tactical mission network software, among others.
It is reportedly the largest sale of U.S. weapons to Taiwan in history.
“This proposed sale serves U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient’s continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability,” read a series of releases announcing the sales issued by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency. “The proposed sale will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.”
“The proposed sale will improve the recipient’s ability to meet current and future threats by enhancing the self-defense of its forces,” noted the release. “The recipient will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment and services into its armed forces.”
“The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” said the DSCA.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry issued a statement recognizing U.S. assistance in providing Taiwan with vital “self-defense capabilities.”
TRUMP TO SIGN NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT ON THURSDAY
“The United States continues to assist Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self‑defence capabilities and in rapidly building strong deterrent power and leveraging asymmetric warfare advantages, which form the foundation for maintaining regional peace and stability,” read a statement by the TDM.
U.S. support for Taiwan has been a point of contention in relations with China. Announcing the largest weapons sale to the country is suspected to add to the geopolitical tension between the two world powers.
