United Airlines has made a startling discovery during its inspections of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes. Loose bolts on plug doors have been found, following a mid-flight incident where a door panel blew out.
In response to the recent catastrophe, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded all 171 Boeing 737-9 Max aircraft. United Airlines, during its inspections, has uncovered concerning results.
“Since we began preliminary inspections on Saturday, we have found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug — for example, bolts that needed additional tightening,” United said in a statement. “These findings will be remedied by our Tech Ops team to safely return the aircraft to service.”
Last week, an Alaska Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing after a section of the plane blew out mid-air. Fortunately, no one was injured, but a young boy had to be held down to prevent him from being sucked out of the plane.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), this particular plane had experienced three pressurization issues between December 7th and January 4th.
The missing door plug from the Alaska Airlines incident was found in the backyard of a school teacher near Portland, Oregon. It will be sent to a lab in Washington D.C. for further examination.
The Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft, introduced in 2016, can accommodate up to 220 passengers and has a range of 3,300 miles. It is currently used by only two airlines, Alaska Airlines and United Airlines.
