UN Blames Familiar Culprit for Muslim Migrant Riots in French Cities

The United Nations Condemns Racism in French Law Enforcement

The recent riots in France following the tragic death of a Muslim teenager at the hands of the police have caught the attention of the United Nations. In a bold statement, a UN spokeswoman accused French law enforcement of racism, sparking a much-needed discussion on the issue.

The Incident That Ignited the Riots

The unrest began when 17-year-old Nahel M. was fatally shot by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in Nanterre, near Paris. According to Reuters, the teenager was pulled over for driving in the bus lane during a traffic jam. However, he refused to provide his license and attempted to flee. Fearing a potential car chase and harm to others, the officer fired at Nahel, hitting him in the left arm and chest. It is worth noting that Nahel had a history of disregarding traffic stops.

The UN Speaks Out

Expressing deep concern, UN human rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani stated, “We are troubled by the killing of a 17-year-old of North African descent by police in France. An investigation into alleged voluntary homicide has been launched. This incident demands that the country confront the pervasive issues of racism and discrimination within law enforcement.”

Shamdasani further emphasized the importance of peaceful assembly and called on authorities to ensure that police use force against violent elements in demonstrations adheres to principles such as legality, necessity, proportionality, non-discrimination, precaution, and accountability. Any allegations of excessive force must be promptly and thoroughly investigated.

A History of Tensions
