ESPN’s ‘Moderna Shot of the Day’ features top contenders in an epic showdown.
The 143rd U.S. Open: ESPN’s Controversial Coverage
The 143rd U.S. Open has come to a close, and it’s safe to say that the network airing it, ESPN, is probably relieved it’s over.
ESPN broadcasted the 2023 U.S. Open, but unfortunately, it faced two major controversies due to the winners: American Coco Gauff and Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic.
The controversy surrounding Gauff was largely ESPN’s fault. The network attempted to downplay her public display of faith after she won the women’s crown.
On the other hand, the Djokovic controversy was out of ESPN’s control, and surprisingly, it turned out to be quite glorious.
The Djokovic Controversy
Before we delve into the controversy, let’s cover a few key points:
- Djokovic vehemently opposes taking the COVID-19 vaccine and has managed to avoid it so far.
- ESPN has fired employees in the past for not getting vaccinated.
- Moderna, a prominent pharmaceutical company and advocate for vaccine mandates, was a major sponsor of the U.S. Open.
Now, watch the clip below to understand the controversy:

Djokovic defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the Men’s Finals, and ESPN, as usual, showed the clinching shot in a replay. Interestingly, that replay was sponsored by Moderna.
While ESPN avoided discussing Djokovic’s vaccination status, others immediately noticed the incredible irony of the reigning U.S. Open champion refusing to take the vaccine.
OutKick’s Clay Travis tweeted, “The Moderna Shot of the Day: Novak Djokovic, who refused to get the worthless covid shot, winning the championship. This just aired on @espn. Incredible.”
While this writer may not go as far as calling the vaccine ”worthless,” it is fair to question its efficacy given the limited data available.
What can be condemned, however, are the individuals who believed it was necessary to inject an unknown cocktail of drugs into people’s bodies under the threat of consequences.
ESPN and Moderna are not the only ones guilty of promoting this mandate. Hospitals, businesses, and government employers also forced their workers to comply, which is far from the principles America was built upon.
So, it’s quite amusing to see ESPN and Moderna highlighting a Serbian tennis star who embodies more American values than these two entities combined.
Ultimately, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving pair.
