The United States Embassy Offers Escape Route for Americans in Israel
The ongoing conflict in Israel has prompted the United States Embassy to provide Americans with an opportunity to leave the country by sea.
In a recent security alert, the Embassy announced that a ship will depart from Haifa, a northern Israeli port city, on Monday, October 16th, and arrive in the Port of Limassol in Cyprus.
“The U.S. government is assisting U.S. nationals and their immediate family members with a valid travel document to depart Haifa via sea for Cyprus on October 16, 2023,” the security alert said. “Boarding begins at 0800 AM local time. U.S. citizens must arrive at Haifa port passenger terminal no later than 0900 AM local time.”
Prior to boarding, Americans must sign an agreement to repay the U.S. government for their travel expenses, as stated in the advisory.
The embassy emphasizes that the plans are subject to change based on Israel’s security situation, and it cannot guarantee complete safety for interested parties.
While Americans are responsible for arranging hotels, flights, and transportation to and from Cyprus, U.S. embassy employees will be available to provide assistance, and chartered flights are being organized.
The journey from Haifa to Cyprus is estimated to take between 10 and 12 hours.
In addition, the White House and State Department have launched chartered aircraft from Israel to Athens and Frankfurt to facilitate the safe departure of thousands of U.S. citizens.
According to reports, more flights between Tel Aviv and Athens are scheduled until at least October 19th, and over 400 Americans have already signed up for the initial flight.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House, stated that the government is exploring additional strategies for evacuating Americans.
“We’re just trying to add to the options,” Kirby said.
Media reports indicate that there are currently between 160,000 and 170,000 Americans in Israel, including tourists, residents, and approximately 600 American citizens in Gaza.
The State Department has issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Israel, advising Americans to reconsider travel to the nation.
