Paramedics Convicted in Connection to Elijah McClain’s Death
Two Denver paramedics have been found guilty of giving 23-year-old Elijah McClain a lethal overdose of the sedative ketamine in 2019.
The jury has found two paramedics, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec, guilty of administering a lethal dose of ketamine to McClain.
Both Cooper and Cichuniec had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Additionally, Cichuniec was found guilty of a second-degree unlawful administration of drugs assault charge, but acquitted of second-degree assault resulting in bodily injury and was taken into custody.
Cooper, on the other hand, was acquitted of both charges.
The paramedics’ actions of administering a large dose of ketamine to McClain, who had been forcefully restrained by police, were deemed reckless by prosecutors despite not assessing his condition or vital signs.
McClain’s cause of death was determined to be “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint” in an updated autopsy report released in 2022.
During the trial, the paramedics argued that they were treating McClain for “excited delirium,” a controversial diagnosis often used to describe individuals being subdued by police.
“During our training, we were told numerous times that this is a safe, effective drug,” Cichuniec told the court. “That is the only drug we can carry that can stop what is going on and calm him down so we can control his airway, we can control him and the safety of him, get him to the hospital as quick as we can.”
In addition, the three Aurora police officers involved in McClain’s arrest are also facing trial for their roles in the incident.
Officers Jason Rosenblatt and Nathan Woodyard were found not guilty, but Officer Randy Roedema was convicted of criminally negligent homicide and assault, leading to his termination from the department.
The five first responders were charged in connection with McClain’s arrest on August 24th, 2019, after responding to a report about a “suspicious person” wearing a ski mask.
McClain’s death gained national attention following the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020, sparking widespread protests.
