Two men convicted for ISIS-inspired plot to kill hundreds of Jews in UK

Two Muslim men residing in the United Kingdom were sentenced to dozens of years in prison over an Islamic State group-inspired plot to kill hundreds of Jews in the Greater Manchester Area.

Walid Saadaoui, 38, of Tunisian origin, and Amar Hussein, 52, of Kuwaiti origin, were convicted on Friday over the planned terrorist plot. Saadaoui, the head of the plot, was sentenced to a minimum of 37 years in prison, while Hussein was sentenced to at least 26 years. Saadaoui’s younger brother, 37, was sentenced to six years in prison for his failure to disclose information about the plot.

Judge Mark Wall revealed the two, who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State group, “were very close to being ready to carry out this plan.”

According to prosecutors, the duo had attempted to gain access to automatic firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, which they planned to use to gun down potentially hundreds of British Jews. If successful, the attack could have been the deadliest in U.K. history.

Saadaoui, a former Italian restaurant owner and hotel entertainer, according to the Guardian, did the brunt of the work, scouting out locations and targets and arranging the purchase of the weapons to be used in the attack. Their scheme fell through after they made contact with a law enforcement operative known as Farouk, an undercover agent.

Saadaoui arranged to pick up two assault rifles, a pistol, and roughly 200 rounds of ammunition from Farouk at a parking lot near a hotel. When he arrived, a counterterrorism team of over 200 officers apprehended him, then his accomplice.

Their scheme began in December 2023, and they were arrested in May 2024.
