Two people are dead and others, including a Kentucky state trooper, are injured after a shooter opened fire near a Lexington airport before heading to a nearby church.
The suspect, who has not been publicly identified but was also killed, shot the trooper near Blue Grass Airport on Terminal Drive shortly on Sunday before they fled to Richmond Road Baptist Church, according to Kentucky State Police.
Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) shared the updated death toll from the shooting in a post on X at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.
“I’m heartbroken to share the shooting in Lexington at Richmond Road Baptist Church has taken the lives of two people. Other injuries — including a Kentucky State Police trooper from the initial stop — are being treated at a nearby hospital. The shooter has also been killed,” Beshear posted.
He added, “Violence like this has no place in our commonwealth or country. Please join Britainy and me as we pray for the families of those lost, each one a child of God gone too soon. Thank you to the [Lexington police] and [Kentucky State Police] for their brave efforts today. Kentucky, let’s stand strong together and support our Lexington neighbors during this difficult time.”
Kentucky State Police responded to the trooper-involved shooting incident before noon on Sunday, when they secured the suspect at the church.
“At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention. There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS is on scene. The suspect is deceased,” Kentucky State Police posted on X.
