Twitter accused Meta’s ‘Threads’ of violating state and federal laws due to alleged IP theft.
Twitter Threatens Legal Action Against Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg
Twitter sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg this week, accusing Threads of stealing protected intellectual property and trade secrets.
The letter comes in response to Zuckerberg’s claim that Threads, operating on a .net domain, gained 30 million users within its first 24 hours since launch. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, released Threads on Wednesday night.
Elon Musk, in a tweet, stated, “Competition is fine, cheating is not,” in response to the news of the letter sent by Musk attorney Alex Spiro to Zuckerberg.

Spiro expressed serious concerns that Meta had unlawfully misappropriated Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property. The letter highlighted that Meta had hired numerous former Twitter employees who had access to Twitter’s confidential information and had retained Twitter documents and electronic devices.
The letter continued, stating that Meta deliberately assigned these employees to develop a copycat app called ‘Threads’ using Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property, violating state and federal laws as well as their ongoing obligations to Twitter.
Twitter intends to enforce its intellectual property rights and demanded that Meta immediately cease using any Twitter trade secrets or confidential information.

The letter warned that Twitter would pursue civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent Meta from retaining, disclosing, or using its intellectual property.
Twitter also informed Meta that it was prohibited from engaging in any crawling or scraping of Twitter’s followers or following data, as stated in the company’s terms of service.
The letter concluded by notifying Meta to preserve any documents relevant to the dispute between Twitter, Meta, and former Twitter employees now working for Meta, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, development of Meta’s Threads app, and communications between these employees and any Meta representative.
