Tunisian authorities dismiss claims Greta Thunberg’s flotilla was hit by drone

The Tunisian Interior Ministry denied allegations of a drone strike against a ship in its waters carrying aid for Gaza.

According to the ministry, the reports of a drone “have no basis in truth.” The ministry’s statement claimed a fire broke out on the ship.

This ship was part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, where activist Greta Thunberg is aboard one of its nearly two dozen ships currently sailing. Ahead of a press conference on Tuesday, the GSF said in a statement that “details on the attack remain limited.”

“The boat is sailing under the Portuguese flag and all six passengers and crew are safe,” GSF confirmed.

There were many CCTV angles to record the fire when it happened. One angle captured a lighted flying object hitting the vessel. Among the passengers and crew, including Miguel Duarte, who spoke at the press conference, there were also eyewitnesses.

“I was on the deck on the back part of the ship, and I heard a drone. I came out of the cover of the deck to see a drone hovering three or four meters over my head,” Duarte said. “The drone stood a few seconds on top of a bunch of life jackets, and then dropped a bomb.”

“There was a fire on board immediately. We picked up the fire extinguishers, we were able to fight the fire successfully, and everybody was safe, fortunately,” Duarte said.

The GSF established its online presence with Instagram and X accounts roughly two months before this alleged attack. Its TikTok and YouTube accounts are even newer, with only two TikTok videos and a single YouTube reel.

This flotilla came into existence in June, less than a month after the U.S.-Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation was founded to be among the few providers of food to the region. The foundation is an attempt to replace the United Nations. In its first five weeks of operation, the GHF claimed to deliver 52 million meals.
