Tucker Carlson says voters feel let down by Trump over Iran war
Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson said President Donald Trump going to war with Iran is a “betrayal” to voters who supported the president because of his promise to end foreign wars.
Carlson said it’s “wounding” that Trump went back on his word of no new foreign wars when the United States launched joint missile strikes with Israel against Iran.
“Breaking faith with those people, those voters, the ones who actually got Trump elected, and whose coalition promised a new day in American politics, that’s a big deal,” Carlson said on Piers Morgan Uncensored Friday. “It’s a betrayal.”
Carlson, who has received backlash from those within the conservative movement over his criticism of Israel, said the Trump voters he spoke to are upset over the Iran war.
“They’re mad, but they’re more than mad. It’s ‘I can’t believe he did this to us,’” he said.
Throughout Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, Trump said he would end foreign wars if he was reelected. Entering his second administration, the war in Gaza and Russia’s war in Ukraine were two conflicts voters hoped Trump would solve.
Prior to “Operation Epic Fury” in Iran, Trump touted that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize over his claim that he ended eight wars in the first year of his second administration.
But Trump now remains unsure if he deserves the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s top honor, telling the Washington Examiner on Thursday he has “no idea” if Operation Epic Fury will “get him over the finish line” with the committee members.
THE CASE FOR TRUMP WINNING A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
Carlson stated the only people who support the Iran war are those born between 1946 and 1964, not the non-traditional Republicans who voted for Trump.
He pointed out that those born between 1946 and 1964, often known as the postwar baby boom generation, have a different perspective of the U.S. in the world.
“They’re not the ones who got Donald Trump elected, actually. The people who got Donald Trump elected are people who hadn’t voted for Republicans before or even voted at all,” Carlson said.
Carlson argued that these voters supported Trump because they wanted someone who was different from the previous occupants of the Oval Office.
“They’re non-traditional Republican voters who voted for Trump because he promised not to keep doing the same thing, and one of the things he promised not to do again was to hand operational authority to Benjamin Netanyahu, as other presidents have,” Carlson said.
“We don’t want any more of that. Why would we?” Carlson added.
Carlson said people won’t “hand control” to Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro, who are both staunch supporters of Israel, arguing those conservative commentators don’t have America’s “[best] interest” in mind.
Republican support for continuing strikes in Iran has grown from 54% to 66% in recent weeks, according to a Washington Post poll that interviewed 1,000 people.
COALITION TO SEND WARSHIPS TO HORMUZ WHILE US BOMBS ‘THE HELL OUT OF THE SHORELINE,’ TRUMP SAYS
While Carlson and some other conservative commentators criticize Trump for the war, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed the tensions within the MAGA movement over the military operation.
When asked about the social media tensions online, Leavitt told a gaggle of reporters, “I would just remind people X is not real life.”
“This president lives in the real world,” Leavitt continued. “And with respect to MAGA, President Trump is the leader of MAGA. He’s the creator of the MAGA movement. And there is nothing more ‘America First’ than taking out terrorists who have maimed and killed our own servicemen and -women, who chant ‘Death to America,’ and who pose a threat to the homeland.”
