Trump opposes leading candidate for House Speaker – Report
Trump Refuses to Back Leading Candidate in House Speaker Race
It seems like the drama surrounding the vacant speaker of the House role is far from over. Former President Donald Trump is not happy with the current direction of this saga. According to Politico, Trump does not support House Majority Whip Tom Emmer as a candidate for speaker.
While Trump hasn’t publicly criticized Emmer in one of his trademark Truth Social posts, he has privately expressed his lack of support to his allies. Emmer is one of several Republicans vying for the speaker’s gavel, but none of them have received Trump’s endorsement as of now.
Kevin McCarthy, the former speaker who was ousted and triggered this mess, has endorsed Emmer. However, Team Trump is not convinced. Pro-Trump platforms have been increasingly vocal in their opposition to Emmer.
“If somebody is so out of step with where the Republican electorate is, where the MAGA movement is, how can they even be in the conversation?” said Boris Epshteyn, a top Trump adviser.
Epshteyn emphasized that a speaker cannot be elected without Trump’s support and the support of his wing of the GOP.
“We need a MAGA speaker. That’s what it comes down to. Because if you look at the numbers, if you look at the energy, if you look at the heat, this is the Trump party, this is the MAGA party. It is no longer the old-school khaki establishment Republican Party,” he said.
It remains to be seen if Trump will launch an attack against Emmer himself, but the message is clear: Emmer lacks the support of the MAGA movement, which could be detrimental to any Republican seeking the speaker role.
As seen with Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, even with Trump’s support, a candidate can fail to secure enough votes to become speaker. Democrats are united in voting for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, but he doesn’t have enough votes to win.
This has created a frustrating gridlock in the House of Representatives, with neither side having enough votes for their preferred candidate. Cooperation between the parties seems unlikely, although some speculate it may be inevitable.
Currently, there is no clear path to securing the necessary votes for any viable speaker candidate.

What challenges does the GOP face in finding a consensus candidate who can bridge the divide between Trump loyalists and more moderate factions within the party
Jim Jordan’s failed bid for speaker in 2018, Trump’s endorsement holds significant weight within the Republican Party. Without Trump’s backing, Emmer’s chances of securing the speakership may be slim.
This is not the first time Trump has injected himself into House leadership drama. In the days leading up to the removal of Speaker McCarthy, Trump publicly criticized him for not taking a stronger stance on investigating alleged voter fraud in the 2020 election. McCarthy’s subsequent endorsement of Emmer appeared to be an attempt to appease Trump and regain his support.
However, it seems that Trump remains unconvinced. Emmer’s moderate stance on certain issues and his willingness to work across the aisle have drawn criticism from the more conservative members of the party, who view compromise as a betrayal of Trump’s “America First” agenda.
Emmer, on the other hand, has defended his record, highlighting his support for conservative policies and his loyalty to Trump during his presidency. He argues that the party should not turn its back on unity and should instead focus on winning back the majority in the House.
With the speaker vote scheduled for next week, the pressure is mounting for Republicans to find a consensus candidate who can unite the party. Trump’s refusal to back Emmer puts the GOP in a difficult position.
If Emmer fails to secure the speakership, it is uncertain who Trump will support as an alternative. Other potential candidates include Rep. Steve Scalise, the current House minority whip, and Rep. Jim Banks, the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee.
Regardless of the outcome, Trump’s involvement in the House speaker race highlights the continued influence he wields within the party. His refusal to support Emmer underscores the divisive nature of Republican politics and the challenge of finding a leader who can bridge the divide between the Trump loyalists and the more moderate factions of the party.
In the end, the Republican Party will have to navigate these internal tensions if it hopes to regain control of the House in the upcoming midterm elections. Whether that entails embracing Trump’s MAGA movement or charting a new path forward remains to be seen.
