Trump warns Sherill will ‘double your energy bills’ in pitching Ciattarelli to New Jersey voters
The article reports on President Donald Trump’s criticism of democratic rep. Mikie Sherrill’s energy policies amid the New Jersey gubernatorial race between Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli. Trump, speaking at a telephone rally for ciattarelli, warned voters that Sherrill’s policies would considerably increase energy costs, while praising Ciattarelli’s promise to cut energy bills. Rising electricity prices have become a central issue in the 2025 election as early voting begins. Both candidates have focused on energy affordability, with Sherrill pledging to declare a state of emergency to reduce utility costs and Ciattarelli promoting an “all of the above” energy approach. Polls show Sherrill leading but indicate Trump’s influence in the race. The article also highlights broader voter concerns about escalating electricity bills nationwide.
Trump warns Sherill will ‘double your energy bills’ in pitching Ciattarelli to New Jersey voters
President Donald Trump warned voters against “fake and corrupt” Rep. Mikie Sherill‘s (D-NJ) energy policy as early voting begins in her race against Republican Jack Ciattarelli to be the next governor of New Jersey.
As energy bills continue to rise, they have become a major factor in the 2025 elections as Nov. 4 approaches. Early voting in the election began Saturday.
“Mikie Sherrill looks [like] such an innocent name, but her energy policies would send your prices soaring and make New Jersey even more expensive than it already is,” Trump said at a telephone rally for Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli Friday night.
The president further showed his support for Ciattarelli beyond his endorsement through a telerally where he praised the GOP candidate.
“Jack is going to be great and he’s going to cut your energy bills in half, and she’s going to double your energy bills so New Jersey, just on energy bills alone … on energy alone, I think Jack should win,” Trump said, per the Associated Press.
Trump’s comments come as Democrats have begun focusing their messaging on energy, after Trump campaigned to cut energy prices last year. The cost of electricity has continued to soar, despite Trump’s promises, for most Americans, and is shaping up to be a major campaign issue. Sherrill and Ciattarelli have both shifted their focus as electricity bills are at the top of voters’ minds in the state.
“Day One as governor, I’m declaring a state of emergency on utility costs using emergency powers to end these rate hikes and drive down your bills,” said Sherrill in her first TV ad of the general election.
Ciattarelli pledged to “lower electricity bills” in a campaign ad and has worked to tie Sherrill to the current Democratic governor on electricity prices as he looks to an “all of the above approach.”
According to a Rutgers University Eagleton poll released Thursday, Sherrill leads Ciattarelli by five points, also finding that Trump is proving to be a significant factor in the race after he gained favor in the blue state last year.
Following the passage of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Democrats not only leaned into the cuts to entitlement programs such as Medicaid, but have also highlighted the GOP’s aggressive phasing out of clean energy tax credits from former President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.
TIMOTHY MELLON IS TRUMP’S ‘FRIEND’ WHO ANONYMOUSLY DONATED $130 MILLION TO PAY TROOPS: REPORT
According to left-wing think tank Data for Progress, 60% of voters reported paying more for electric bills than last year. A PowerLines poll conducted with Ipsos shows that “three out of four Americans, across party lines, say they are worried about rising utility bills.” The Energy Information Administration estimated that average residential electricity prices in the U.S. will jump from $0.1648 per kilowatt-hour in 2024 to around $0.1790 per kilowatt-hour next year.
