Trump vows to solve crime in Chicago ‘just like’ in Washington after weekend of shootings

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he will help Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) fight crime in Chicago “just like I did in DC.”

Trump teased the move of federal law enforcement to Chicago in a Truth Social post, which followed a Labor Day weekend crime surge in the Windy City, during which 58 people were shot, including eight fatally, in 37 separate shootings.

“Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet,” Trump said on Truth Social. “I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon.”

“CHICAGO IS THE MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!” the president said in a follow-up post.

This Labor Day Weekend in Chicago saw more than double the amount of shootings of last year’s long weekend, during which 28 were shot and 10 killed. However, overall shootings and homicides are down so far this year.

The Labor Day weekend crime surge follows Pritzker’s comments Sunday morning, in which he called Trump’s threatened deployment of federal law enforcement officers and National Guard troops to Chicago an “invasion” on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also made headlines over the holiday weekend for joining Workers Over Billionaires protesters on Labor Day and chanting, “No federal troops in the city of Chicago! No militarized force in the city of Chicago!” Johnson also signed an executive order Saturday that preemptively put in measures to resist a federal takeover of the city.

The increased anti-federal takeover rhetoric and action from the Illinois officials come after White House “border czar” Tom Homan confirmed that there were “discussions” about turning a naval base north of Chicago into an operations center for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and possibly National Guard troops.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also said her department would send a “strike team” to Chicago, telling Fox News Radio‘s Guy Benson on Thursday that the mission would be “specifically targeting illegal criminals.”

In Trump’s Truth Social post on Tuesday, he called Chicago “the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far.” Brazilian-based think tank The Igarapé Institute listed Durán, Ecuador, as the city with the highest murder rate per 100,000 people in 2023, with Chicago not making the organization’s top 20. Chicago ranked eighth on the list published by the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Public Safety Initiatives of U.S. cities with the highest homicide rates in 2024.

Rochester Institute of Technology, however, lists Chicago as having the highest homicide rate of U.S. cities with a population of over 1 million people. The Windy City has also had the most murders of any U.S. city consecutively from 2012 to 2024, according to Wirepoints, an Illinois research and commentary nonprofit organization.

JUDGE RULES TRUMP DEPLOYMENT OF NATIONAL GUARD TO LOS ANGELES VIOLATED FEDERAL LAW

MSNBC anchor Joe Scarborough called on Pritzker on Tuesday morning to phone Trump and say, “Let’s partner up.” He said the governor should ask for a law enforcement partnership with federal and local officials that “respects the balance of federalism,” though he did say Trump does not have the “constitutional authority” to deploy National Guard troops to the city.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday morning that Trump’s June deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the consent of state and local officials violated federal law.
