Trump tops Biden for State of the Union viewers, loses against himself

Trump’s State of the Union address drew over 32 million TV viewers, with about 32.6 million tuning in across 15 networks, according to Nielsen. This level is higher than most Biden-era SOTU audiences but lower than Trump’s own peak viewership in previous terms (ranging from about 37 to 48 million).Biden’s SOTU audiences in the Biden years varied from roughly 27 to 38 million. A CNN poll following the address found 64% of respondents had a very or somewhat positive reaction, and the nearly two-hour speech framed Trump’s message as a “turnaround for the ages.” Most respondents felt he had the right priorities for his second term, though 46% said he hadn’t focused enough on the country’s most significant problems.

Trump tops Biden for State of the Union viewers but underperforms against himself

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this week attracted over 32 million television viewers, according to Nielsen data.

Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday drew an audience of 32.6 million over 15 television networks, per Nielsen figures released on Thursday, which aggregated viewership across ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, EstrellaTV, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, CNN en Español, FOX Business, FOX News Channel, MSNow, Newsmax, and NewsNation.

Trump’s viewership for the first State of the Union address of his second term is up from most of former President Joe Biden’s speeches to Congress, but down from the numbers who have tuned in on television to watch his own addresses in the past.

Over 47.7 million watched Trump’s State of the Union speech in 2017, 45.5 million in 2018, 46.7 million in 2019, and 37.1 million in 2020.

During the Biden years, those numbers were largely lower. Just under 30 million television viewers watched Biden’s State of the Union address in 2021, compared to 38.1 million in 2022, 27.3 million in 2023, and 32.2 million in 2024.

A CNN poll conducted after Trump’s latest address to Congress found that 64% of respondents had a very or somewhat positive reaction to the president’s address, which appeared to be the longest such speech on record, lasting nearly two hours. During the speech, the president told Congress that the United States has undergone a “turnaround for the ages.”

More than half of respondents said that Trump has had the right priorities during his second term, while 46% said the president hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems.
