Trump will be interviewed by Tucker Carlson and skip the first GOP debate.
Former President Donald Trump to Skip GOP 2024 Primary Debate, Opt for Interview with Tucker Carlson
According to The New York Times, former President Donald Trump has decided to forgo the GOP 2024 presidential primary debate and instead sit down for an interview with Tucker Carlson. Multiple sources close to Trump have confirmed that he will not attend the debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, despite leading his Republican opponents by double digits in national and early primary state polls.
In a lengthy statement shared on social media, Trump questioned the need for a debate, stating, “People know my record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I debate?” This decision comes as no surprise, as Trump had previously expressed his intention to avoid the first debate on the campaign trail.
Earlier this month, Fox News executives reportedly had dinner with Trump in an attempt to convince him to participate in the debate. However, as per the Republican National Committee 2024 debate rules, Trump would have had to sign a pledge to support the eventual GOP presidential nominee, which he declined to do, citing his lack of support for certain candidates.
This move by Trump is not unprecedented, as he had previously skipped a debate hosted by Fox News during his 2016 run. However, his decision to opt for an interview with Tucker Carlson instead could potentially steal the spotlight from the RNC event.
Carlson’s Controversial Stance
Tucker Carlson, despite receiving legal notices from his former employer, has refused to stop airing his show on Twitter. This week, he has released interviews with Democratic primary candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Additionally, Carlson was reportedly seen at Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, further fueling speculation.
Reactions to the News
Reactions to Trump’s decision and his interview plans with Carlson have been mixed. New England radio host Howie Carr praised the move, tweeting, “What a great move by Trump & by Tucker! Bleep the Fox RINO’s.” Meanwhile, New York Times reporter Jonathan Swan noted that this would be a major affront to both Fox News and the RNC.
According to Puck News journalist Tara Palmieri, both Trump and Carlson are currently working out the logistics for the interview on the night of the debate.
