Trump to pardon reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley as his clemency acts draw scrutiny

President Donald Trump will pardon reality television couple Todd and Julie Chrisley, the latest clemency actions from the president to help those convicted of bribery, theft, and fraud.

The couple was indicted in 2019 and convicted in 2022 on charges of bank fraud and tax evasion. Todd Chrisley was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Julie Chrisley was sentenced to seven years. Trump appeared to issue full pardons to the former stars of the reality show Chrisley Knows Best on Tuesday.

“Your parents are going to be free and clean, and I hope we can do it by tomorrow,” Trump said in a video post to their daughter, Savannah Chrisley, who earlier this year pushed for her parents’ release from prison at the Conservative Political Action Conference and at the White House.

The Chrisley announcement comes as Democrats scrutinize Trump’s recent pardons of Scott Jenkins, a former Virginia sheriff previously convicted of bribery, and Paul Walczak, a former nursing home executive who pleaded guilty to tax crimes.

Trump’s pardons of the two men and the Chrisleys come as he has pushed congressional Republicans to launch investigations into former President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen to conduct pardons and other presidential business, hoping to nullify his predecessor’s past clemency actions.

Democrats swiftly denounced Trump’s actions as another instance of alleged corruption after Trump defended his pardons.

“Sheriff Scott Jenkins, his wife Patricia, and their family have been dragged through HELL by a Corrupt and Weaponized Biden DOJ,” Trump wrote in a social media post announcing the pardon.

Jenkins was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in March after he was convicted of taking more than $75,000 in bribes through a “cash-for-badges” scheme.

Walczak’s mother, Elizabeth Fago, raised millions for the president’s campaigns and was invited to a $1 million Trump fundraiser last month, according to the New York Times.

“This guy went to jail for screwing over nurses and doctors at his nursing homes—taking $10 million from their paychecks to buy a yacht,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin wrote. “His mom goes to a $1 million per person fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, and now he’s pardoned. These are the people Trump looks after. Not you.”

Fago and her daughter were also part of a Justice Department investigation into the public leak of Ashley Biden’s diary to undermine her father’s presidential campaign in 2020. Neither woman was charged or convicted in the investigation.

Virginia Democratic candidates were also unequivocal in their denunciations of Jenkins, the former sheriff of Culpeper County.

“Scott Jenkins was in a position of public trust and he broke the law,” Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger wrote on social media. “He abused his power, violated his oath, committed multiple federal crimes, and was to be held accountable for his crimes.”

“The president just pardoned him in an affront to the oath he swore, the community he betrayed, the laws he broke, and the law enforcement officers who investigated this case and hold themselves to the highest ethical standard every day,” Spanberger continued.

Victor Salgado, one of a handful of Virginia Democratic lieutenant governor candidates, called Jenkins “a lawless man” in a statement condemning Trump’s actions.

“Once again, President Trump has used the awesome power of the Pardon Clause to protect adjudicated criminals,” Salgado said.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) called the pardon of Jenkins “a slap in the face to every American taxpayer and every person working hard to make an honest living.

In recent weeks, Trump has directed attention to Biden’s use of an autopen as his mental and physical health declined. He accused Biden aides of effectively running the show and using Biden to allegedly enact a liberal agenda.

Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, is leading the investigation into the former president’s autopen use and requested Biden’s physician to testify before the committee.
