Trump to meet with Mamdani in Oval Office on Friday

President Donald Trump confirmed he will meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, whom he previously referred to as a “communist,” on Friday, November 21st, in the Oval Office. Mamdani, a socialist who will be sworn in on January 1st, has publicly criticized Trump but expressed willingness to meet, mainly to discuss issues like affordability and lowering the cost of living in New York City. The meeting will be their first and underscores the meaning of their relationship for the city’s future. Mamdani, born in Uganda and a Queens resident, shares ties to the borough with Trump, who was born and raised ther. The specifics of their discussion remain unclear. Trump has previously met with other New York mayors, including Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio.

Trump to meet with ‘Communist Mayor’ Mamdani in Oval Office on Friday

President Donald Trump confirmed he will meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on Friday.

The president previously said he would meet with the socialist, whom he called a “communist” in the announcement, but it was unclear when.

“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!” he wrote in a Truth Social post.

Mamdani, who will be sworn in on New Year’s Day after his victory earlier this month, has struck a defiant tone against Trump. He told the president to “turn the volume up” in his victory speech, which was laden with criticism of Trump, on election night. However, Mamdani has said he is willing to meet with the president, mainly to discuss affordability.

“I will be reaching out to the White House as we prepare to actually take office,” Mamdani said last week, noting their relationship will be key “to the success of the city.”

If Trump “wants to speak about lowering the cost of living or delivering cheaper groceries, like he ran on [in 2024], I’m there to have that conversation,” Mamdani added. “I’m here to work for the benefit of everyone that calls the city home, and that wherever there is a possibility for working together toward that end, I’m ready, and if [the administration’s policies] are to the expense of those New Yorkers, I will fight.”

Trump took a particular interest in New York City this year during its mayoral election. Trump was born there in 1946 and grew up in Queens. Mamdani was born in Uganda but also represented and lives in Queens.

It’s unclear what the pair will discuss. It will be their first meeting.

TRUMP SAYS MAMDANI WANTS TO MEET IN PERSON IN WASHINGTON

The president has met with current Mayor Eric Adams multiple times in the past and with former Mayor Bill de Blasio after Trump was elected to his first term in 2017.

The Washington Examiner reached out to a Mamdani transition spokesperson for comment but did not receive a response.
