Trump to attend Cambodia-Thailand peace deal signing in Malaysia
President Donald Trump is slated to attend a ceremony in Malaysia to formalize a peace deal he developed for Cambodia and Thailand.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan announced Tuesday that Trump is “looking forward” to attending the ceremony, which will cement a peace infrastructure hashed out in July.
“During the summit, we hope to see the signing of a declaration known as the Kuala Lumpur Accord between these two neighbors to ensure peace and a lasting ceasefire,” Hasan said.
Cambodia and Thailand, which have a history of animosity due to disputes over the demarcation of their 508-mile border, unexpectedly erupted into violence over the summer.
A land mine explosion in one of the country’s many disputed border areas injured five Thai soldiers in July, escalating tensions already boiling over from a May incident in which a Thai soldier shot dead a Cambodian counterpart in a separate contested region.
Cross-border skirmishes erupted in response, initially through infantry but eventually involving the two warring kingdoms deploying truck-mounted rockets and fighter jets.
The conflict, which lasted five days, resulted in the deaths of approximately 48 soldiers and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border.
Malaysia and the United States worked to establish an initial ceasefire on July 28, with phone calls from Trump to both sides of the conflict reportedly playing a crucial role in brokering peace.
During a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he boasted of his influence in deescalating the dispute.
“That was going to be a very bad war, and so we’re honored we got involved, and it’s essentially settled. I think they’re going to be settling it today. So it went for a few days. That was gonna go on for years — that could have gone on for years,” Trump said.
“Millions of people could have been killed,” he added. “We ended the war, and we’re very happy about it.”
CAMBODIA TO NOMINATE TRUMP FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR NEGOTIATING CEASEFIRE IN REGION
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol told reporters in August that he would “acknowledge [Trump’s] great efforts for peace” by nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was given to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who ultimately announced she was dedicating the prize to “the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause.”
