President Donald Trump doubled down on his recent strike against a submarine by threatening to “close” the drug production fields in Colombia.
“President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.
“The purpose of this drug production is the sale of massive amounts of product into the United States, causing death, destruction, and havoc. Petro, a low rated and very unpopular leader, with a fresh mouth toward America, better close up these killing fields immediately, or the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely,” Trump added.
The post comes after Petro condemned the strike against what Trump claimed was a “drug-carrying submarine” that was traveling “on a well known narcotrafficking transit route” at the time. As a result of the strike, one Colombian man was killed, along with another anonymous man, with two survivors repatriated to Colombia and Ecuador.
“Why, I wonder, doesn’t a national news outlet care that a U.S. missile has killed a humble fisherman from Colombia in Santa Marta,” Petro wrote on X in Spanish. “The USA has invaded national territory with a missile fired to kill a humble fisherman, has destroyed his family, his children. This is the homeland of Bolívar and they are murdering his children with bombs.”
“The USA offended the national territory of Colombia and killed an honest, hardworking Colombian. !Let the sword of Bolívar be raised!” Petro added.
Meanwhile, Trump referred to the deceased Colombian as a “narcoterrorist.” Trump alleged that drug production “has become the biggest business in Colombia, by far” in his Sunday post.
“And Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America. AS OF TODAY, THESE PAYMENTS, OR ANY OTHER FORM OF PAYMENT, OR SUBSIDIES, WILL NO LONGER BE MADE TO COLOMBIA,” Trump wrote.

Petro had his U.S. visa revoked by the State Department over his participation in a pro-Palestinian protest in New York City last month. During the protest, he called on the U.S. military to “disobey Trump’s order.”
Colombians largely disapprove of Petro, with a June Invamer poll showing Petro’s disapproval rating at 64%.
