President Donald Trump urged Senate Republicans to attach voter-identification requirements to any funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, arguing that DHS funding should be tied to photo IDs and proof of citizenship. speaking at a Memphis Safe Task Force Roundtable, he said Republicans should cancel their upcoming recess if necessary to secure a deal and urged lawmakers to “Make this one for Jesus.” He demanded that the SAVE America Act be bundled with any DHS funding and criticized Democrats who oppose it. The DHS has been effectively shut down since mid-Febuary due to the stalemate over funding.

President Donald Trump reupped his call for voter identification to be included in any deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security, telling Senate Republicans to cancel their upcoming recess if necessary.
Trump said Monday during a Safe Task Force Roundtable in Memphis, Tennessee, that any funding for the DHS should be tied to voter identification, including photo requirements and proof of citizenship.
“It should be part of the homeland security bill, and I’m requesting that the Republican senators do that immediately,” Trump said during his remarks. “You don’t have to take a fast vote. Don’t worry about Easter going home. In fact, make this one for Jesus, OK? Make this one for Jesus.”
The Senate is expected to break for a two-week recess starting Friday to observe Passover and Easter. However, GOP leaders and Trump have floated canceling the break if Congress cannot reach a deal to fund the DHS.
Trump demanded over the weekend that the SAVE America Act, an election integrity bill, be attached to any deal to fund the DHS, complicating Senate negotiations.
“I don’t think we should make any deal with the Crazy, Country Destroying, Radical Left Democrats unless, and until, they Vote with Republicans to pass ‘THE SAVE AMERICA ACT,’” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social on Sunday. “Put it all together, and also, let Leader Thune clearly identify those few ‘Republicans’ that are Voting against AMERICA. They will never be elected again! In other words, lump everything together as one, and VOTE!!! Kill the Filibuster, and stay in D.C. for Easter, if necessary.”

Trump reportedly rejected a deal brought to him by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) that would fund everything within the DHS except ICE, which could be addressed in a party-line budget process known as reconciliation.
The DHS has been shut down since Feb. 14, after Congress failed to reach a deal to fund the agency due to Democratic opposition over Trump’s use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota, which resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens. The operations involved ICE officers who were sent to the state amid reports of fraudulent activity in the Somali community.
