Trump teases new Colombia tariff over drug trafficking
former President Donald trump has announced plans to impose new tariffs on Colombia as part of his ongoing campaign against drug trafficking in South America. He described Colombia as a “drug manufacturing machine” led by a “lunatic” president, referring to Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Trump is expected to reveal the specific tariff rates soon. This move was hinted at earlier by Senator Lindsey Graham, who described the upcoming tariffs as “major” and warned that those involved in narcoterrorism against the U.S. would face severe consequences. Trump has publicly criticized Petro, accusing him of endorsing large-scale drug production in Colombia and threatening to target drug fields and cut U.S. subsidies to the country, which he called a “long term rip off” of America. Petro has denied these accusations, asserting his integrity and lack of greed.
Trump teases new Colombia tariff over drug trafficking
President Donald Trump revealed that he will be slapping a new tariff on Colombia, the latest move in his war on drug trafficking in South America.
Trump told reporters on Sunday night that he will announce the specific rate on Monday, while calling the country a “drug manufacturing machine” with a “lunatic” for president.
The move to impose additional tariffs on Colombia was already teased by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who met with Trump earlier in the day.
In an statement after that meeting, Graham called the new levies “major” ones.
“Those who continue to be involved in narcoterrorism against the United States will pay a very heavy price,” he added.
Trump has been in a feud with Colombian President Gustavo Petro for months now, which seemingly culminated on Sunday.
In a blistering Truth Social post, Trump trashed Petro as an “illegal drug leader” who has been “strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia.”

Trump then threatened to strike these drug production facilities, and cut all U.S. subsidies to Colombia, which he said “are nothing more than a long term rip off of America.”
Petro has responded to these threats and actions from Trump by denying he’s a drug trafficker, saying “in my heart there is no greed.”
