Trump teases investigation into Chris Christie over ‘Bridgegate’
President Donald Trump hinted at an investigation into former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over the 2013 “Bridgegate” scandal.
Trump tuned into Christie’s Sunday show appearance on ABC, after which he raged against his noted critic and resurfaced the decade-old scandal that saw Christie’s chief of staff and a Port Authority official close off lanes on the George Washington Bridge in an effort to create a traffic jam for a mayor who refused to endorse Christie’s gubernatorial reelection bid.
“I just watched Sloppy Chris Christie be interviewed on a ratings challenged ‘News’ Show, ‘This Week With George Slopadopolus,’ on ABC Fake News. Can anyone believe anything that Sloppy Chris says? Do you remember the way he lied about the dangerous and deadly closure of the George Washington Bridge in order to stay out of prison, at the same time sacrificing people who worked for him, including a young mother, who spent years trying to fight off the vicious charges against her. Chris refused to take responsibility for these criminal acts. For the sake of JUSTICE, perhaps we should start looking at that very serious situation again? NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Christie was never charged in relation to the scheme and consistently denied knowing of it.
However, his chief of staff at the time, Bridget Kelly, and the Port Authority official, David Wildstein, were convicted on fraud and conspiracy charges. Those convictions ended up being tossed by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the scheme, while involving deception and corruption, did not violate federal law.
Christie has commented on “Bridgegate” in the recent past, specifically in 2023 when asked what he learned from the scandal.

“That personnel is policy. That you have to be even more careful that there’s no insignificant appointment, no insignificant hire, because that person acts in your name every day,” Christie responded at the time.
A potential investigation into Christie would seemingly renew hostilities between him and Trump, which have died down as the former New Jersey governor is out of elected office.
