Report: Trump’s Target Letter Lists 3 Potential Violations in Election Overturning Attempts.
The Target Letter: Trump’s Potential Violations
The target letter that former President Donald Trump says that he received over the weekend in special counsel Jack Smith’s federal criminal investigation into his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election mentions three statutes that the former president may have violated.
According to ABC News, the three federal statutes mentioned in the letter are: conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, deprivation of rights under color of law, and tampering with a witness, victim, or an informant.
The letter does not provide any specific details on how prosecutors believe Trump may have violated these laws.
Interestingly, it seems that Trump is the only one who has received a target letter, as his allies and lawyers have been reaching out to everyone in his circle who could have also received one.
Trump expressed his frustration on social media, stating, ”Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”
Jack Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November to investigate Trump’s handling of sensitive documents and his alleged efforts to overturn the election. The Washington grand jury is believed to be examining Trump’s conduct between the 2020 election and January 6, 2021.
The grand jury, meeting in Washington’s E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse, has reportedly heard testimonies from Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, as well as Pence’s former chief of staff, Marc Short. Other individuals who have appeared before the grand jury include former Director of the Office of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, White House lawyers Patrick Philbin and Pat Cipollone, and several others.
