Trump sees foreign influence on Supreme Court in tariff decision
An article from the Washington Examiner reports that President Donald Trump accused the Supreme Court of being swayed by foreign interests after the Court issued a 6-3 ruling that the international Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize him to impose the sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs. Trump said the justices were influenced by foreign interests and a small political movement, calling the supporters of the challenge “sleazebags” and alleging they are China-centric. He indicated there could be a formal inquiry into foreign influence and suggested certain justices fear this loud, overseas-backed movement. In the same remarks, Trump announced a 10% global tariff on top of existing duties and criticized the ruling for not addressing what happens to the tariff revenue, saying it could be litigated for years.
Trump accuses foreign interests of influencing Supreme Court on tariff decision
President Donald Trump accused the Supreme Court on Friday of being swayed by foreign interests, after justices handed down a decision overturning his “Liberation Day” tariffs.
“It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests and a political movement that is far smaller than people would ever think,” Trump told reporters after the Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling determining that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act that the president used to carry out his sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs does not authorize him to impose the levies.
Trump suggested China-centric “sleazebags” had pressured justices into issuing the ruling.
“I know the people that brought the lawsuit and sleaze bags, major sleaze bags, but I know, and they’re a foreign country-centric,” he said. “We got sued by sleazebags. I know them well, China-centric, but outside country-centric, and they’re going to end up not doing as well as they did before.”
When asked if he had evidence of foreign influence and if the White House would launch an investigation into the allegation, Trump told the Washington Examiner’s Christian Datoc, “You’re going to find out.”
Trump alleged the people seeking to influence the Supreme Court are part of a “small movement. But these people are obnoxious, ignorant, and loud,” he said, “and I think certain justices are afraid of that.”
“I think that foreign interests are represented by people that I believe have undue influence. They have a lot of influence over the Supreme Court, whether it’s through fear or respect or friendships,” he added. “I don’t like them. I think they’re real slime balls. We’ve got to do what’s right for the country. You’ve got to do what’s right for the Constitution.”
REVEALED: TRUMP’S EXPLETIVE-LADEN RESPONSE TO SUPREME COURT TARIFF DECISION
During the same press conference, Trump announced a 10% global tariff on top of existing duties, under section 122. He also said he was unsure about what would happen to millions in revenue brought in by the tariffs, saying the court’s decision had failed to address the matter.
“I said, ‘Well, what happens to all the money that we took in?’ It wasn’t discussed. Wouldn’t you think they would have put one sentence in there saying that keep the money or don’t keep the money, right? I guess it has to get litigated for the next two years,” the president said. “It’s almost like not written by smart people. They don’t even talk about that. … We’ll end up being in court for the next five years.”
