President Donald Trump tore into Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) on Wednesday in Kentucky, suggesting that the governor’s dyslexia diagnosis makes him unfit to be president.
Newsom, a frequent Trump critic widely acknowledged as a top contender to be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028, has recently begun discussing how the learning disability affected him as a child.
“He admitted he has mental problems, that he’s not a smart person. That he has a mental lack of ability,” the president told the crowd. “He’s unable to read a speech, can’t read.”

“He said he has a lot of mental problems,” Trump continued, before noting he was criticized by a reporter for broaching the subject. “Nothing’s wrong with that, but I don’t want the President of the United States to have a cognitive deficiency, right? And when he admitted this, I said, ‘I think he just lost the Democrat nomination.’”
Trump added that when it comes to being president, “You’ve got to be sharp as hell.”
Last month, Newsom published a memoir titled Young Man in a Hurry, where he recounted being diagnosed as dyslexic at the age of five but finding out about it until he was in fifth grade, after reading it on papers located on his mother’s desk.
“I’m not trying to impress you, I’m just trying to impress upon you, I’m like you. I’m no better than you,” Newsom said during a recent book event in Atlanta, Georgia. “You know, I’m a 960 SAT guy.” He later said, “You’ve never seen me read a speech, because I cannot read a speech.”
