Trump says Khamenei is dead
The Washington Examiner reports that, in the wake of joint U.S.–Israel strikes on Tehran, Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, calling it justice for the Iranian people and the best chance for Iranians to reclaim their country. He said intelligence suggested leadership losses and that more leaders were gone across multiple sites. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also suggested there were growing signs of Khamenei’s death and urged iranians to overthrow the regime, with israeli officials telling U.S.officials that Khamenei is dead and outlets like Axios reporting on the claim; a photo of his body was reportedly shown to Netanyahu.Iran’s foreign minister, though, denied the claim, saying Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian are alive.the piece places these statements against the broader context of U.S.–Israel strikes and calls from both leaders for iranians to oppose the regime, while also noting related coverage and analysis.
Trump says Khamenei is dead: ‘The single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country’
President Donald Trump on Saturday afternoon declared that Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead, following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes against Tehran.
“This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang of bloodthirsty THUGS,” the president said in a post to Truth Social. “This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country.”
The president’s statement comes after Israeli officials said Khamenei was dead. Israel’s ambassador to Washington told U.S. officials Khamenei is dead, hours after a joint U.S.-Israel strike targeted the Iranian government, according to Axios and other outlets. A photo of his body was shown to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an Israeli official told the New York Post.
TIANA LOWE DOESCHER: TRUMP’S ATTACK ON IRAN IS AN ATTACK ON CHINA’S ECONOMIC SUPERIORITY
Trump’s post to Truth Social came shortly after he told several outlets he “believed” Khamenei was dead.
“I don’t want to say anything definitively until I see things, but we believe he is. And much of their leaders are gone. Not only from the one site but two other sites that we attacked also,” the president said during an interview with ABC News. “We had great intelligence, and so we think much of leadership is gone.”
The development marks a critical moment for Iran, as Netanyahu and Trump have urged those who have participated in mass uprisings against the Ayatollah’s government to take over the country.
During a speech on Saturday, Netanyahu suggested there are “growing signs” the overnight U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran killed the country’s supreme ruler.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, claimed Saturday morning that “as far as I know,” both Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian are still alive, during an interview with NBC News.
THE US AND ISRAEL ATTACKED IRAN: WHAT WE KNOW
In his press conference, Netanyahu urged the Iranian people to overthrow Khamenei’s theocratic government, similar to President Donald Trump’s calls.
The strikes offer protestors an opportunity to “unshackle themselves from tyranny,” the Israeli leader said, calling the moment a “once in a generation chance” to overthrow the Iranian regime.
