Former President Donald Trump Suggests Civil War Could Have Been Negotiated
Former President Donald Trump made a thought-provoking statement during a campaign rally in Iowa, expressing his fascination with the Civil War. In a bid to engage his supporters, Trump shared his belief that the war, which claimed countless lives, could have been resolved through negotiation.
“So many mistakes were made. See, there was something that I think could have been negotiated, to be honest with you. I think you could have negotiated that. All the people died. So many people died.”
However, Trump’s remarks, similar to those made by fellow Republican candidate Nikki Haley, failed to acknowledge slavery as the primary cause of the four-year conflict. He did not provide further details or offer an alternative reason for his suggestion.
Trump went on to contemplate the legacy of Abraham Lincoln, speculating that the 16th president may not have been as well-known if he had negotiated the war. Emphasizing his point, Trump referred to Lincoln as “the Abraham Lincoln.”
“He would have been president … but he wouldn’t have been the Abraham Lincoln. Would’ve been different, but that would’ve been OK. … I know it very well, I know the whole process that they went through, and they just couldn’t get along. That would’ve been something that could’ve been negotiated, and they wouldn’t have had that problem. But it was a hell of a time.”
Trump’s visit to Iowa comes ahead of the Jan. 15 caucuses, marking the first nominating contest in the 2024 presidential election cycle. He currently maintains a significant lead in polls over other Republican contenders, including Nikki Haley and Governor Ron DeSantis.
