Trump rips Cuellar for running as Dem in reelection bid after pardon
Former President Donald Trump criticized Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar of Texas for choosing to run for reelection as a Democrat shortly after Trump granted him and his wife a pardon. Cuellar had been indicted in May 2024 on charges including bribery,illegal foreign influence,and money laundering related to alleged payments from an Azerbaijani oil company and a Mexican bank. Trump accused cuellar of showing a “lack of loyalty” by remaining with the Democratic Party, which Trump described negatively, especially after the DOJ under President Biden pursued the corruption charges.Cuellar has defended himself by blaming the Biden governance’s Department of Justice for politically targeting him due to his criticism of biden’s border policies. Despite the pardon, Cuellar announced his bid for another term in Texas’s 28th Congressional District as a Democrat, where he faces primary challengers. President Donald Trump railed against Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) for running for reelection as a Democrat after Trump pardoned him.
Trump pardoned Cuellar and his wife on Wednesday after the couple was indicted on corruption charges under former President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice. The Texas border district congressman was indicted in May 2024 on charges of bribery, illegal foreign influence, and money laundering after allegedly taking over half a million dollars from an Azerbaijani oil company and a Mexican bank.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday morning, saying the congressman’s decision to stick with the Democratic Party in his reelection bid displayed a “lack of loyalty.”

“Only a short time after signing the Pardon, Congressman Henry Cuellar announced that he will be ‘running’ for Congress again, in the Great State of Texas (a State where I received the highest number of votes ever recorded!), as a Democrat, continuing to work with the same Radical Left Scum that just weeks before wanted him and his wife to spend the rest of their lives in Prison – And probably still do! Such a lack of LOYALTY, something that Texas Voters, and Henry’s daughters, will not like,” Trump said.
Cuellar told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins after Trump’s pardon that he believed the indictment came after he openly criticized the Biden administration’s border policies. Cuellar has consistently broken ranks with Democrats on border policy and immigration.
Trump has said the Biden administration “weaponized” its justice system against Cuellar.
“The Democrats, under the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, who always use extreme force and jail-time to destroy their political opponent, wanted to put Congressman Henry Cuellar, and his wife, Imelda, in PRISON, for 15 years, which I predicted these Radical Left Lunatics would do – And they never stopped wanting to fulfill this evil quest!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.

“When the Democrats overwhelmingly lost the 2024 Presidential Election, and power with it, they, regardless, did everything they could to keep going after the Cuellar family. The Dems were vicious, and all because Henry strongly wanted, correctly, BORDER SECURITY!” Trump wrote.
Cuellar, who is up for reelection in Texas’s 28th Congressional District in 2026, announced he is running for the ticket as a Democrat on Wednesday following Trump’s pardon. There are several Democrats challenging him in the primary set for March 3, 2026.
