Trump remains optimistic about reaching a peace deal in Ukraine war: ‘We’re going to get it done’

President Donald Trump is remaining confident that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in its over four-year war is reachable, as progress in the negotiations has stalled.

Trump addressed the state of the peace talks on Sunday night, stressing to reporters that “We’re going to get it done.”

“The Russia-Ukraine situation — we’re going to get it done. I have confidence we’re going to get it done,” the president said, pointing to the peace deals he has brokered throughout his second term thus far.

“Think of it, I got seven done, all of which were impossible to do,” Trump said, before adding that he thought a deal in the Ukraine war would be the “easiest” to reach.

It has been far from easy for Trump since he emerged as a mediator between the two sides following his return to the Oval Office.

He has dealt with pressing needs from both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a potential deal, as well as Putin’s continued attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure while negotiations play out.

Trump managed to secure a summit with Putin in Alaska over the summer, their first in-person meeting together since 2019, which eventually led to a White House summit between Trump and multiple European leaders, including Zelensky.

But the negotiations have lapsed as the next step would inevitably be a meeting between Putin and Zelensky, which the Kremlin seemingly skirted.

On Friday, Putin suggested Moscow as the location for the peace talks, which was laughed off by Zelensky.

“He [Putin] can come to Kyiv. … I can’t go to Moscow when my country’s under missiles, under attack, each day. I can’t go to the capital of this terrorist,” Zelensky responded.

Trump did reveal on Sunday that he would talk to Putin again “very soon,” specifying that it would be “over the next couple of days.”
