Trump promises ‘serious retaliation’ after ISIS kills three Americans

President Donald Trump has vowed “serious retaliation” following an ISIS attack in Syria that killed two U.S. soldiers and one U.S. civilian interpreter. The attack occurred in a dangerous area not fully controlled by the Syrian government, targeting a joint U.S.-Syrian patrol near Palmyra. Three other soldiers were wounded but are reported to be recovering. Trump expressed condolences for the victims and noted the anger of Syria’s President Ahmed al Sharaa over the incident. The attack was confirmed by Pentagon officials and U.S. central Command. U.S. and international officials, including the U.S.Ambassador to Turkey and Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister, condemned the ambush and reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism alongside Syrian partners. This incident comes shortly after Syria’s new government, which replaced Bashar al-Assad’s regime, strengthened cooperation with the U.S. in fighting ISIS, with about 900 U.S. troops currently stationed in eastern Syria for anti-ISIS operations.

Trump promises ‘serious retaliation’ after ISIS kills three Americans including two soldiers in Syria

President Donald Trump vowed to enact “serious retaliation” after an ISIS gunman killed two U.S. soldiers and one U.S. civilian interpreter in Syria on Saturday.

“We mourn the loss of three Great American Patriots in Syria, two soldiers, and one Civilian Interpreter. Likewise, we pray for the three injured soldiers who, it has just been confirmed, are doing well,” he said on Truth Social, referring to the three wounded Syrian troops.

“This was an ISIS attack against the U.S., and Syria, in a very dangerous part of Syria, that is not fully controlled by them,” he added. “The President of Syria, Ahmed al Sharaa, is extremely angry and disturbed by this attack. There will be very serious retaliation.”

While preparing to leave the White House for the Army-Navy football game, Trump reiterated his response to the attack.

Before Trump’s statements, a Pentagon official told the Washington Examiner that the attack occurred in an area not under the Syrian government’s control and that initial assessments show ISIS was likely involved in the attack.

The incident was also confirmed by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, and U.S. Central Command on social media.

An ISIS-affiliated gunman carried out the ambush attack on a joint U.S.-Syria field patrol near Palmyra, Syria, where an American delegation was touring at the time of the attack. The gunman was killed.

An outpouring of grief for the deceased U.S. soldiers and interpreter was apparent on social media Saturday afternoon. Both U.S. and foreign officials responded in mourning to the news.

“I strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist ambush targeting a joint U.S.–Syrian government patrol in central Syria,” U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said. “We mourn the loss of three brave U.S. service members and civilian personnel and wish a speedy recovery to the Syrian troops wounded in the attack. We remain committed to defeating terrorism with our Syrian partners.”

“Israel expresses its condolences and shares in the grief of the families of the two U.S. service members and the U.S. civilian who were killed, and wishes a swift recovery to those wounded in today’s attack by an ISIS gunman in Syria,” Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar wrote. “Israel stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States, its closest ally.”

The attack comes one month after Syria’s interim president met with Trump at the White House last month to strengthen ties between their nations. During the visit, Syria revealed it became the 90th member to join the international coalition whose sole mission is to combat ISIS.

TWO US SOLDIERS KILLED BY ISIS GUNMAN IN SYRIA, OTHERS WOUNDED

Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad last December, Syria’s new government has been fighting ISIS in partnership with U.S. forces. Earlier this week, a CENTCOM commander confirmed “multiple instances of collaboration with the Syrian government to counter very specific ISIS threats.”

About 900 U.S. troops are based in eastern Syria to carry out anti-ISIS operations.
