Trump open to meeting with Jeffries, Schumer over shutdown deadlock
President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to meet with Democratic leaders House Minority Leader Hakeem jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to resolve the ongoing government shutdown. When asked if he would sit down with them after his trip to Asia, Trump responded affirmatively, urging democrats to agree to reopen the government so negotiations can begin. He criticized Obamacare, which is central to the dispute, blaming Democrats for the prolonged shutdown and calling them “lost souls.” Trump had previously met with Jeffries and Schumer just before the shutdown began but the talks were unsuccessful. As the shutdown marks its 25th day, Trump is traveling to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit. Democrats, including Schumer, have criticized Trump for leaving Washington during the crisis, accusing him of avoiding obligation.
Trump open to meeting with Jeffries, Schumer over shutdown deadlock
President Donald Trump signaled he is open to meeting with Democratic leadership in Congress as the government shutdown continues with no end in sight.
Trump was asked by a reporter on Saturday night whether he would “sit down” with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) over the shutdown impasse after his trip to Asia.
“I would, I’d be willing to,” Trump responded. “I would’ve now, too. You know, I left, I said, ‘Come on over, just put the government back.’ All they have to do is say ‘yes’ and it’s over, and we start, and then we go into negotiation.”
He continued by bashing Obamacare, expiring subsidies of which are at the heart of the shutdown debate.
“Look, Obamacare has been terrible. We can make it better. I’m all for that — but they’re not,” Trump said before pinning the blame for the lingering shutdown on the Democrats. “This is purely Democrat. They’re doing some really bad things. I think they’re lost souls.”
Trump previously met with Jeffries and Schumer at the end of September just before government funding was set to expire. It was ultimately unsuccessful, and the government shut down the next day.
Trump also trolled the Democratic leaders afterward, posting photos of the two at the meeting with “Trump 2028” hats in front of them to Truth Social.
Now, the government shutdown has entered its 25th day, and Trump will be out of Washington for at least a week, as he is headed to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit.
THUNE’S CHILLY RELATIONSHIP WITH SCHUMER IN DEEP FREEZE THANKS TO SHUTDOWN
Democratic leadership have seized on the trip to claim Trump and Republicans are “skipping town.”
“Americans deserve a government that works as hard as they do — not a president that flies out of town and away from responsibility at the time they need one most,” Schumer said in a statement earlier on Saturday.
