Trump meets with Fox executives to discuss debate concerns after expressing reluctance to face hostile opponents and questions, according to reports.
Former President Donald Trump Engages in Dinner Discussion with Fox News Executives
In an intriguing turn of events, former President Donald Trump recently dined with Fox News executives to discuss the upcoming Republican Party primary debate. This comes as a surprise, considering Trump’s previous dismissal of the idea as “stupid” and his reluctance to face “hostile” opponents and questions on the debate stage.
The dinner took place at Trump’s club in Bedminster and included Fox News President Jay Wallace and CEO Suzanne Scott. Interestingly, this meeting occurred shortly after Trump learned about his impending criminal charges, marking the third case in which he has been indicted.
“The executives ‘made a soft appeal’ in lobbying the 77-year-old former president to participate in the debates,” according to a report from The New York Times.
It seems that Trump’s advisors have cautioned him about the potential consequences of not participating in the debates. They fear that his absence could inadvertently boost another candidate’s chances of gaining momentum.
For now, Trump remains the frontrunner, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis solidly in second place. The New York Times/Siena poll, considered the top poll in the nation by FiveThirtyEight, reveals that no other candidates come close to reaching double digits in terms of support. Former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley all sit at a mere 3%. The remaining candidates fare even worse, polling at 2% or less.
While Trump currently enjoys a dominant position in The New York Times/Siena poll, it is worth noting that nearly half of the respondents who chose Trump (46%) are “considering other candidates,” as indicated by the poll.
The dinner between Trump and Fox News executives was described as “cordial,” and the former president has yet to make a decision regarding his participation in the debates.
In a recent interview with Breitbart News, Trump emphasized the significance of debates in his previous victories, both in securing the 2016 GOP nomination and winning the general election that same year.
“I don’t want to face ‘hostile questions’ from a ‘hostile network’ and ‘hostile’ candidates on the debate stage,” Trump stated.
Despite acknowledging the potential risks, Trump expressed his enjoyment of participating in debates and his belief that they serve as a valuable platform.

Trump specifically mentioned his reluctance to engage with candidates polling at “one, two, three, four, five” points, which, according to The New York Times poll, includes all candidates except for DeSantis.
While participating in the debates may be seen as a risky move, Trump’s willingness to engage in these discussions demonstrates his belief in their importance and his desire to make his voice heard.
