Trump increases pressure on Maduro with new sanctions on associates

President donald Trump intensified his pressure on Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro’s government by imposing new sanctions on Maduro’s associates and their families. The U.S. Treasury Department targeted several immediate family members of Malpica Flores, Maduro’s wife’s nephew, who was accused of corruption and financially aiding the Caracas government.Among those sanctioned was Maduro’s sister-in-law, Eloisa Flores de Malpica. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that these sanctions aim to disrupt the networks supporting maduro’s regime and prevent Venezuela from flooding the U.S. with drugs. This move is part of a broader effort to undermine Maduro’s government by severing ties with key supporters. Earlier sanctions included actions against Venezuelan model and DJ Jimena Romina Araya Navarro for allegedly funneling money to a prominent gang linked to Maduro. Tensions remain high as Trump continues to reject Maduro’s legitimacy, announcing increased military presence near Venezuela and demanding the return of stolen U.S. assets.

President Donald Trump continued escalating his pressure campaign against the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on Friday with new sanctions on his associates and their families.

The Department of the Treasury sanctioned several immediate adult family members of Malpica Flores, the nephew of Maduro’s wife, who was accused of corruption and assisting Caracas financially. Among them was Maduro’s sister-in-law, Eloisa Flores de Malpica.

“Today, Treasury sanctioned individuals who are propping up Nicolás Maduro’s rogue narco-state. We will not allow Venezuela to continue flooding our nation with deadly drugs,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Maduro and his criminal accomplices threaten our hemisphere’s peace and stability. The Trump Administration will continue targeting the networks that prop up his illegitimate dictatorship.”

In a Treasury Department press release, Flores was described as “a person determined to be responsible for or complicit in, or to have directly or indirectly engaged in, any transaction or series of transactions involving deceptive practices or corruption and the Government of Venezuela or projects or programs administered by the Government of Venezuela.”

The sanctions are the latest in an extensive series aimed at further damaging Caracas by cutting off the government’s close associates from assisting in governance.

Earlier this month, the Treasury Department sanctioned Venezuelan model, actress, and DJ Jimena Romina Araya Navarro after she was accused of having a romantic relationship with the head of the Tren de Aragua gang, which Maduro is accused of being linked to. A portion of her earnings made while playing at nightclubs across the world was allegedly funneled to the gang.

Tensions with Venezuela have reached a fever pitch as Trump continues to move assets north of Venezuela and insists on Maduro’s illegitimacy.

In a threatening message on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump boasted that Venezuela was “completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America.” He warned that pressure would only increase and demanded the government “return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us.”
