Trump hints at new monument in DC

Former President Donald Trump has hinted at plans to construct a new monumental arch in Washington, D.C., reminiscent of paris’s Arc de Triomphe. the proposed arch, designed by Harrison Design, would be located near Arlington National Cemetery and is intended to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Featuring two eagles and a gold-winged angel atop, the arch would be surrounded by a traffic circle and bears similarities to Brooklyn’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch. Even though originally envisioned as a temporary structure, there is now consideration for making it permanent.

The idea was presented to Trump by Justin Shubow, president of the National Civic Art Society, and received keen interest. However, the plan has faced criticism from architects who argue the arch would disrupt vital symbolic connections between national landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, possibly replacing solemnity with spectacle.

This initiative follows Trump’s broader ambition to add prominent “stunning buildings” to D.C.,including previously proposed expansions to the white House grounds, which have sparked political controversy. The concept of erecting a monumental arch in the capital is not new, with a similar project called the Millennium Gate proposed around the year 2000 to mark the new millennium.

Trump hints at new monument in DC

President Donald Trump hinted at the construction of a new monument in Washington, D.C., in a social media post early Saturday.

The new monument mirrors Paris’s Arc De Triomphe, and in the post appears to be across the Potomac River from Arlington National Cemetery.

The president was spotted peeking at the design, drawn up by Harrison Design, during a meeting in the Oval Office with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Trump is considering construction of the arch in celebration of America’s 250th birthday next year, the Washington Post reported.

Justin Shubow, president of the National Civic Art Society, presented the idea to the president and others, and they were enthusiastic about the project, the outlet reported.

The new arch also appears similar to the Grand Army Plaza Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch in Brooklyn. It would have two eagles with a gold-winged angel on top, with a traffic circle around it.

Nicolas Charbonneau, who works at Harrison Design, shared images of the arch last month, saying it serves as a “closer study of what the #America250 arch could be.”

The America 250 arch was intended to be temporary, but White House officials are considering plans aimed toward a permanent building.

Eric Jenkins, an architect and former educator at the University of Maryland and Catholic University, told the Architect’s Newspaper that the arch would “disrupt a symbolic connection” between “the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington House and Arlington National Cemetery’s ‘most hallowed ground.’”

“Connection is the key—linking, bridging, reconciling. That’s what the Memorial Bridge does. It unites Lincoln’s legacy with Arlington, once home to Robert E. Lee, now a site of national mourning. The arch would more than likely obscure John F. Kennedy’s eternal flame that can be seen from the Lincoln Memorial on dark nights,” Jenkins said.

“Inserting a grand, false monument into that axis and space breaks that symbolism. It risks replacing subtlety with spectacle, solemnity with show. Instead of healing, it imposes,” he added.

Trump said last month that he wants to see “beautiful buildings” in D.C. The arch plans come after the president unveiled grand plans to create a large ballroom attached to the White House, which is likely to change the appearance of the grounds vastly. It drew condemnation from Democrats, and some suggested he wants the ballroom to use for a potential third term.

It’s not the first time an arch has been proposed in the nation’s capital.

The National Monuments Foundation proposed an arch, named Millennium Gate, in 2000. The turn of the millennium was thought to be an occasion that should be enshrined in the city’s architecture.“The United States should build something at this point in time, at the height of its power, prosperity and influence,” NMF said.
