Trump endorses ‘America First Patriot’ John Sununu in New Hampshire Senate primary
President Donald Trump has endorsed former Sen. John Sununu (R-NH), the older brother of former Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH), in the Republican primary for a New Hampshire Senate seat.
“It is my Great Honor to endorse America First Patriot, John E. Sununu, who is running to represent the beautiful State of New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday afternoon.
“John is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected Leaders in New Hampshire, and many Republicans in the U.S. Senate and, as your next Senator, he will work tirelessly to advance our America First Agenda,” he said, listing the economy and law enforcement as examples of Sununu’s many campaign priorities.

Among Sununu’s backers are the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).
“John Sununu is the clear choice to be New Hampshire’s next U.S. Senator, and President Trump’s critical endorsement has put an end to the primary,” SLF Executive Director Alex Latcham said.
The president’s announcement is a notable snub of former U.S. Ambassador Scott Brown, who is facing off against Sununu in the GOP primary. The victor will go on to challenge Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH), who is running for the Senate this time around to fill the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH).
As a whole, Republican leaders are mobilizing behind Sununu because they believe he may be more electable than Brown. Thune appeared to say as much back in December.
“I mean, Scott’s a friend of mine,” he previously told the Washington Examiner in an exclusive interview. “And so, you know, those are always challenging, difficult circumstances when you get friends who are running. But for us, it’s obviously going to be about who has the best chance of picking up a seat, which we think we have a really good shot at. And you know, clearly the polling right now is favorable for John Sununu.”
Sununu has been critical of Trump in the past, but he has since moved away from his anti-Trump stance. In November, he vowed to be an “effective advocate” working with Trump if elected this year.
“We need someone who can be an effective advocate with President Trump in this White House, and there’s absolutely no question I will be that person,” Sununu said at the time.
He also dismissed the notion that Republican voters would prefer a candidate fully in support of Trump.
“I don’t think people in New Hampshire want a rubber stamp for anyone,” Sununu added.

In response to the former senator’s high-profile endorsement, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee cast doubt on his chances to win the general election this fall.
“John Sununu’s long record of selling out to Wall Street and big corporations is completely out of touch with New Hampshire voters, and they will reject him in November,” DSCC spokeswoman Maddy McDaniel said in a statement. “Republicans have not won a New Hampshire Senate seat in over a decade and they will lose again in 2026.”
