President Donald Trump has endorsed Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones to run for governor in 2026,replacing the term-limited Republican Brian Kemp. Jones is competing against Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr for the Republican nomination.Trump praised Jones as a “warrior,” accomplished businessman, former SEC championship-winning football player, and a loyal supporter of Trump’s MAGA agenda. The endorsement highlights Jones’s commitment to policies such as economic growth, tax cuts, American energy dominance, border security, law enforcement, election integrity, and defending the Second Amendment. Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, several candidates, including former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, have entered a crowded primary race for governor.

President Donald Trump endorsed Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones on Monday to become the state’s next governor.
Jones is challenging Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr to win the Republican nomination for governor ahead of the 2026 election to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. Trump’s backing could hand the lieutenant governor an added boost in a competitive state the president flipped red last November, and where Democrats hope to clinch a gubernatorial pickup in 2026.
Trump referenced his performance in the 2024 election in his Truth Social message backing Jones, saying that the “Highly Respected and very popular Lieutenant Governor, Burt Jones, is running to be the next Governor of the Great State of Georgia, a very special place to me in that we had a BIG Presidential Election Win just eight short months ago.”
“He is a WARRIOR, a successful Businessman, former SEC Championship winning Georgia Bulldogs football player (Known for his toughness!), and now, as Lieutenant Governor, Burt has proven he has the Courage and Wisdom to deliver strong results for the incredible people of his wonderful State and Nation,” the president added.
“As your next Governor, Burt Jones will fight hard to Grow the Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Champion American Energy DOMINANCE, Continue to Secure our now Secure Southern Border, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Advance Election Integrity, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” Trump continued. “Burt Jones for Governor has my Complete and Total Endorsement – HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Jones, long known as a loyal Trump ally, touted his alliance with the president’s MAGA agenda when he launched his gubernatorial campaign one month ago.
“I’ve also fought to deliver President Trump’s agenda here in Georgia from day one-and even took arrows from the radical left for doing it. But just like President Trump, I won–and delivered for the people of Georgia, just like he is delivering for the American people in Washington,” the lieutenant governor said in July.
Trump’s endorsement comes as Jones is attempting to fend off a primary challenge from rival Carr, who sued the lieutenant governor’s campaign last week for taking advantage of a 2021 Georgia law allowing him to raise unlimited cash for his gubernatorial campaign.

Republican contenders field a growing number of Democratic challengers on the other side of the aisle.
Former DeKalb County, Georgia, CEO Michael Thurmond became the latest candidate to launch his candidacy last week. State Sen. Jason Esteves, state Rep. Derrick Jackson, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Atlanta pastor Olu Brown have also entered the race ahead of the Democratic primary.
