Trump confirms his Miami golf resort will host G20 leaders after G7 flap

The article reports that former President Donald Trump announced the United States will host the 2026 G20 summit at his Miami golf resort. This marks the first time in nearly 20 years that the U.S. will host the event, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary. Trump had previously planned to host the 2020 G7 summit at his Miami golf club, but it was canceled due to ethics concerns and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump also confirmed he will not attend this year’s G20 summit in Johannesburg, citing disagreements with South Africa’s policies on white farmers. Instead, Vice President “JD” (presumably Jared Kushner or another official) will represent the U.S. at the event.

The announcement was made alongside Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump also mentioned inviting Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he endorsed, to attend the 2026 summit.

A White House official stated the U.S. will take a streamlined,back-to-basics approach in hosting the G20,focusing on economic growth and financial stability. Trump is expected to host the summit at cost, with a smaller guest list compared to recent G20 gatherings, and he will not profit from the event.

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will host the 2026 G20 summit at his golf course in Miami.

“As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary next year, the United States will have the honor of hosting the G20 summit right here in America for the first time in nearly 20 years,” Trump told reporters on Friday at the White House.

Trump planned to host the G7 summit at Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami in 2020 before the proposal was scrapped over ethics concerns that his business would profit from his presidency. The summit was ultimately held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump also confirmed on Friday that he will not attend this year’s G20 summit, scheduled for this November in Johannesburg, due to disagreements with South Africa over its policies regarding white farmers.

“I won’t be going. JD will be going, great vice president, and he looks forward to it,” Trump said.

Trump made the announcement alongside Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who ran against the president for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump also said he invited Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who was at the White House on Wednesday, to attend the G20 summit from Dec. 14-15, 2026.

“I endorsed him, actually, and he won, and he’s going to be a great leader of Poland,” Trump said of Nawrocki.

A White House official told CBS that the U.S. “will be taking a back-to-basics approach to its host year, streamlining the summit and related workstreams and aligning the agenda with the G20’s founding goals of economic growth and financial stability.”

The official added that Trump would hold the summit “at-cost, and will receive no profit from either the State Department or a foreign government,” and that “the guest list will be smaller than recent G20 summits.”
