Trump calls to cut off commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants
State of the Union: Trump urges passage of Delilah’s Law to keep illegal immigrant truck drivers off US roads
President Donald Trump called on Congress to swiftly pass Delilah’s Law, a bill that would prohibit any state from issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
“Many, if not most, illegal aliens do not speak English and cannot read even the most basic road signs as to direction, speed, danger, or location,” Trump said during his State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday evening, motioning to Delilah and her father, Marcus Coleman, in the room.
“That’s why tonight, I’m calling on Congress to pass what we will call the Delilah Law, barring any state from granting commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens,” Trump said.
Delilah Coleman was severely injured at the age of five when an illegal immigrant operating an 18-wheeler crashed into her car. The driver illegally entered the country during the Biden administration and had been given a license to drive a commercial vehicle by the state of California.
Coleman’s case is one of many highlighted by the Trump administration over the past year as negative consequences of the millions of illegal immigrants who the Biden administration allowed into the country.
A number of fatal traffic incidents involving illegal immigrants granted commercial driver’s licenses have surfaced nationwide.
In August, Florida police identified an illegal immigrant, Harjinder Singh, as the driver of an 18-wheeler truck who caused a fatal crash in St. Lucie County that resulted in the deaths of three people.
The Trump administration threatened to withdraw millions of dollars in federal funding from blue states, including California, New Mexico, and Washington, unless the states adopted and enforced English-language proficiency requirements for commercial drivers.

Last November, the DOT announced that California would have to revoke thousands of “illegally issued” commercial driver’s licenses.
As of late February, illegal immigrants who were issued commercial driver’s licenses in California have roughly one month to reapply for the document and pass the required exams.
